Unauthorized synthroid dosage

Anonymous
I was on 100mcg of synthroid and my endo upped my dosage to 112 mcg because I was having trouble losing weight and felt really tired. I felt much better on the 112 dosage but my endo moved me back down to 100 because he said it was too much after checking my levels 6 weeks later. I felt crappy on the 100 dosage and still had a refill on the 112 dosage so I filled it and have been taking it. I've felt better and am slowly losing some weight.

How bad is it that I'm doing this? I know it's only temporary because my refill will run out and my endo won't write me a new rx for it. But I finally feel how I think a person should typically feel. I should be able to lose weight on 1200-1300 calories per day, when I wasn't losing any eating the same amount on a 100 mcg dosage.

How should I proceed? I don't think he'll allow me to continue on the dosage I feel better on. Does your endo allow this?

Do you know what your tsh was at on the higher dosage? Assuming it wasn't at hyper levels, I might try to find another dr who'll prescribe you a dose you feel good at.

You have to insist.

Doctors don't care about their patient's symptoms until they really, really, insist. All they do is look at your numbers (so if you're not responding like the majority you're screwed), and check for medical interactions.

My DH, who is an MD but does research, had to go to his father's appointments and insist on getting his dosage modified.

I highly recommend that you read the book "Stop the Thyroid Madness". http://www.amazon.com/Stop-Thyroid-Madness-Revolution-Treatment/dp/0615477127/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1433119775&sr=8-2&keywords=Stop+the+Thyroid+Madness

It reveals how misinformed the vast majority of medical professionals are about optimal thyroid management. You should absolutely find a healthcare practitioner (more likely a functional medicine MD than an endocrinologist) that will dose you according to your symptoms rather than the very flawed TSH which is NOT an indicator of how much thyroid hormone is actually circulating in your system. Also, you might want to explore NDT (natural dessicated thyroid---which contains T3 and T4) as an alternative to Synthroid which is just synthetic T4.

Best of luck---you are not alone.

OP, please note that a diet of 1200 - 1300 calories a day is not safe, even for weight loss. 1500 is the absolute minimum.

That is not necessarily true.

Your TSH was too low on 112 mg.
Hyperthyroidism is dangerous to your heart, eyes, and numerous other bodily symptoms. If you're not feeling well with levels in the normal range, seek another doctor, but intentionally making yourself hyperthyroid to lose weight is just stupid and unsafe.

OP,

Try taking synthroid at bedtime, ( after a gap of a few hours from your last meal). The synthroid is used more effectively by your body if you have it at bedtime.

I think that you may find that 100 mg will be sufficient.

My endo said that Synthroid typically doesn't lead to much weight loss and that too many people have too high expectations that it will. He said the interplay of hormones regulating fat gain and loss is much more complex than just thyroid - so don't get your hopes up about the higher dosage, OP.

I agree with others who say the 112 dosage is too much. Have you tried a diet which is low carb on the 100 dose? You really have to be down below 50g of carbs, with about 25 of that coming from fiber to see good weight loss. High protein at each meal will cut your hunger.
