Important blog post by WTU.
"As the Washington Teachers' Union (WTU) General Vice President, I hear countless stories of DC Public Schools teachers being bullied by their own local school principals. Like spousal abuse, this is our dirty little secret. The extent to which our teachers suffer at the hands of cruel administrators is a hidden fact of school life... Some of the workplace bullying complaints that have been alleged right here on our doorsteps have occurred at Jefferson MS, Lafayette ES, Orr ES (2014), Truesdell EC, Watkins ES (2014), and West EC. Out of all of the complaints I have received on workplace bullying; only one teacher was willing to come forward. " http://thewashingtonteacher.blogspot.com |
I get that teachers are reluctant to call out bully principals, but how are we as parents supposed to believe anonymous complaints? I would gladly support serious teacher complaint protection laws to prevent retaliation. I'm not sure how else to break the logjam. |
|
If I were a teacher I would be embarrassed that Candi Peterson represented me in any way. What a bunch of bullshit, unsubstantiated mudslinging.
No wonder so many question the credibility of the WTU. |
Thanks, DCPS. DC attends one of the schools mentioned and the new principal is a vindictive, hateful bully to teachers and parents, especially members of the HSA. This is accurate. |
|
The post weirdly uses as its primary examples a study on bullying in **UK** schools, and a notable case in PG county. Not sure how either of those supports the notion of bullying by principals in DC schools. (This is't to say it does or doesn't happen in DC too -- but need a little more to go on.)

Sounds like we are both parents of children at the same school. I happen to think our new principal is a wonderful breath of fresh air who doesn't put up with the small group of parents that only acted in their own best interests and who apparently had a lot of influence over the previous principal. Also happen to think that if the teachers are unhappy they should consider that their previous leader set up an environment that catered to them and was unsustainable. |
| Yeah, way to go WTU! Fight bullying with bullying! Definitely don't try to bring any facts into this issue. |
let me guess: Lafayette? |
|
I love a union calling out bullying.
Pot meet kettle. |
| Lafayette? I thought parents were happy there. |

A school can run without a principal. However, we all know that a school is DOA without a committed teaching stAff. I'm floored when parents are dismissive of teacher concerns. How staff is treated is directly related to how your kids are treated.

You really don't get it. You equate dismissing anonymous whiners to dismissing teachers. I would totally listen to a teacher if one approached me. I wouldn't listen to you because you're just an anonymous whiner here. Make more sense? Or do you want to continue to double down on your same dumb strategy. |
Thanks for proving my point! Heaven help the folks that teach your kid! |
| This is gross. And there's a fair amount of misogyny. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't as a principal. If you don't lead firmly, you're a pushover and can't "clean up." If you're decisive and don't pander, you're a bully. WTU should be ashamed this is something they've posted. I, too, would be embarrassed if I were a member. |
| The Watkins bullying by the Principal and the former AP has been discussed at length at DCUM. |
