I honestly don't understand why she didn't
just share the truth from the beginning. How exotic she would have truly been, had she said: I am an American who is obsessed with Spanish culture and can't wait to get my residency. My parents introduced me when I was young, I changed my name to Hilaria, and I am naming my children after Spanish names. I am madly in love and no one can stop me.

It would have engendered some good jokes but I think we can all think of more outrageous examples. I met a guy who thought he had encountered the soul of one of his dead relatives in a cat, etc.

People are always enthralled by scam artists. Hillary is not getting any more attention than any of the other scam artists in history. it's because it is so audacious that people go to such extremes to be scam artists that it gets attention. It's like a horror movie.

Exactly. Wasn’t there a really popular book a few years back about a woman who almost married a scammer? The book was all about why we’re so fascinated and how so many of us fall for the con. Psychologically it’s fascinating. I’m also fascinated by the response - the doubling down, the evasion, the refusal to see or admit wrongdoing. The inability to just say sorry. It’s so interesting. Especially when coming from people who have espoused a lot of values that they seem very happy to throw out of the window when their own backs are against the walls.

I don’t hate her or wish her harm. I followed her for a while and actually think she’s beautiful. Cuckoo but very pretty. She seems quite sweet and well-meaning. I also think she’s a little tone deaf and it doesn’t surprise me that she doesn’t understand how she could have upset people. I don’t begrudge anybody being proud of their body but anyone with even the slightest bit of sensitivity could see why the ‘I’m just trying to show the world what a postpartum body looks like’ shtick was going to grate.

I feel for her. I think this must be excruciating. And I also think she has to cop to a mistake made and apologize. Firstly because it’s the right thing and secondly because the Daily Mail et al aren’t going to drop it until she does.

One of my best friends is a pretty, educated and rich girl from Boston who happens to be first generation American, I don't see her hanging out at restaurants that single, eligible, rich, celebrity males frequent......

Do you call Filipinos "Latinos" who were also colonized by Spain and are also catholic and have Spanish names?

I/4 of the population of the Balearic Islands is foreign. In order, Moroccan, Italian, German and British. The retirees live a quiet life there none of them go to Magaluf to get drunk, that is left to the summer tour groups from Britain.

I've been to Majorca a few times and they really speak a different sounding Spanish to the northern mainland. I'm not a Spanish speaker but for those who are on here, does Hilaria speak Catalan and more specifically the Catalan they speak in Majorca like Rafael Nadal?
