Classmate "doesn't celebrate birthdays"

Anonymous
Out and about today, when I ran into a mom of my child's classmate, I reiterated that our birthday party invite (for two weeks from now) included the child's whole family. She said, "Oh, we don't celebrate birthdays. We go to parties, sure, but not birthdays." I didn't quite know what to say to that. My daughter later told me that the child will sit out of the group if there's a birthday snack brought into class. Is there a religion that doesn't celebrate birthdays? Or is this just strangeness?

Yes, there are religions that do not celebrate birthdays. And, it is their choice, just like Christmas or any other holiday.

I think Jehovah's Witness does not celebrate birthdays.

Google tells me that Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate birthdays.

When I was in fifth grade we could have NO class parties that year because one girl in class, Rachel, was a Jehovah's Witness.

I had JW student in my class last year. He had computer time during any celebration (birthday, Halloween, Valentine's), didn't participate in he Pledge of Allegiance, and his parents returned the free school mascot shirt the PTA provided. They didn't insist he be out if the room or anything, but he knew that his family did not participate, and apparently knew why. When kids asked him, he would just say "because of my family's beliefs."

Or any holidays. No Christmas, Easter, Halloween, etc. I'm not sure about thanksgiving.

Then your kid ends up like Michael Jackson.

I have a coworker who is a Jehovahs Witness. I get the religious aspect behind it, Its about being humble in your daily life and being born isnt anything special to celebrate, because its not like an achievement per say.
I do think its mean to make a kid sit out of a snack at school though if the snack is for someones birthday.
I dont think my friend makes her kids go that far.

They celebrate any holiday Jesus celebrated.

I grew up as a JW. They have a very literal way of viewing the bible. Since the bible only mentions two birthdays and they both end badly, the stance is no birthdays- obviously God doesn't want his worshipers celebrating the day of their birth. They only celebrate wedding anniversaries and their version of passover.

It's a lonely childhood and I'm glad I choose to leave the religion, even though it meant losing my family. I think birthdays are a wonderful time, when a person can feel special for one day.

Why couldn't the mother have simply RSVP'd "no" already? Being a Jehovah's Witness doesn't stop you from being polite.

There's another Christian sect that does this as well. Maybe seventh day Adventists?
