What year did DC begin offering free preschool for 4-year-olds and 3-year-olds? Both DCPS and charters.
Thanks readers! |
| Gained significant momentum after 2008 http://osse.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/osse/publication/attachments/Final%202013%20OSSE%20Pre-K%20Report.pdf |
| I don't know if it was offered as widely as it is today, but I attended PreK as a four year old at Maury way back in 1986. |
| It was called Head Start previously. |
| Brent and Tyler Spanish Immersion 3 year old preschool started in the fall of 2005. |
Head Start is a federal program for low income families. DCPS PK uses local funds to provide PK for residents, regardless of income. Don't conflate them. |
NP -- it uses a mix of Head Start funds and other local funds to fund universal PK3/PK4. |
| They definately still have head start funds and those classrooms must follow Head Start regulations. Ever wonder why your kids brush their teeth at school? Head Start rules. |
| I attended free DCPS (Shepherd) preschool at age 4 in 1975-1976, so it has been around at least that long! |
No I never wondered that. Probably because my kids have never brushed their teeth at school. What are you talking about? |
Mine has when he was in PK3 at a DCPS school in Ward 4. |
At our title 1 school, all PK3 and PK4 kids brush their teeth after lunch and before nap. |
I was in DCPS PreK in 1980
|
| Never heard of brushing teeth at school. How, then, can it be a Head Start rule? |
Could you please point us to this supposed Head Start "rule"? If there is one, many ECE programs in DCPS are seemingly unaware of it, assuming they receive Head Start funding at all. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/WellnessNews/massachusetts-law-day-care-centers-brush-kids-teeth/story?id=9665261 |
