Teachers have stopped teaching?

Anonymous
This marking period in high school, my child has had 4 half days because of PARCC testing. Then because of AP tests, there has been no instruction for 2 weeks. Now my child has a teacher who gives out worksheets to the class EVERYDAY and tells them to help each other while he is on his computer. He has stopped teaching. What is going on in MCPS?

Its everywhere. The end is in sight and they've all given up in favor of planning their long vacations.

1. PARCC testing
2. AP testing
3. A teacher who is not doing what you consider teaching

Why do you generalize from your child's experience to all of MCPS?

Ha! What teacher has the money for a long vacation?

My HS student still seems quite busy despite the delayed openings (some of which he had testing during). I do think the AP classes have basically ended if your child has many of those.

After APs and senior finals, many upper level classes basically end. Yes, kids are expected to show up and sometimes have a final project, but basically the school year is over for them in May. After next week my 11th grader will only have instruction in three classes. Even teachers in the music programs stop teaching after the final concerts which happen in late April-mid May. Pretty ridiculous and a waste of time.

If this is only one high school, then how can this stuff go on? The principal has been there for decades and this is how she runs a school? It seems that the principal has carte blanche and the kids are just taking up space for the next 3 weeks. That is an MCPS problem.

For parents of high school students - are your students being taught or are my kids at the terrible outlier school?

Why don't seniors graduate at the end of the school year - around June 15th? That way high school instruction doesn't stop for the entire school. Either that or have everybody end before Memorial Day.

This quarter has been a complete JOKE when it comes to instruction. How much you want to bet final exams scores (including math) will be in the toilet because kids are not being taught up to the end of the school year. If the curriculum is over, why don't they start exam reviews? Seriously, my kids have been watching movies in class for 2 weeks while kids take AP tests. What is the educational value of watching "Little Mermaid" in English class?

I agree, late spring instruction in high school is a joke. My child keeps asking me to write him notes to leave school early because they aren't doing anything in many of his classes. This is completely unacceptable and I know its happening at many high schools in MCPS from talking to friends and work colleagues.

My Blair 9th grader is still busting ass, and I expect will be right up until finals week. But I'm sure there are many 10th and 11th graders with AP-heavy schedules who are now on cruise-control, and I don't begrudge them. They earned it.

My husband and I are both teachers, and we're heading to Europe this summer with the kids.

No, we're not millionaires, but we're not idiots with our money either.

Thanks for making a sweeping generalization.

You must have many years of experience in a high paying school district then. I can barely afford my bills some months.

It's their mama and papa buying them the trip, but they will never admit it
