Pelvic Pain - Help! I have had pelvic pain for 2 years - been to all kinds of doctors to no avail!

Anonymous
Checked out bladder, intestines, etc... It gets worse 2 days before period and then is awful during period. Can anyone recommend a doctor in DC that specialized in this? I am wondering if it is endometriosis? I have IBS as well, but not sure why it would get so bad during period. Had issues before but not as bad as the last two periods. Taking 3 motrin at once and that isn't alleviating the pain. I would give anything to just be "healthy" and well.

Has your doctor ruled out appendicitis?

Your appendix would have burst by now, if it had been hurting for 2 years.

Endometriosis is a very real possiblity, since it related to your period. I had a friend whose IBS did get worse around her period.

I wish I could tell you a name of a doctor, I would look for a OB/Gyn who is known for really listening to his/her patients.

No, OP, you can have undiagnosed appendicitis. I know someone who complained of severe abdominal pain and had undiagnosed appendicitis that wasn't caught until she was rushed to the hospital when it ruptured.

Meant to say, she complained of abdominal pain for years before it burst.

have you seen a uro-gynecologist? they are hard to find, super-specialized. i saw one in new jersey when i had constant urinary pain. turned out to be a condition called interstitial cystitis.

anyway, i learned a lot about that area when i went through and yes, IBS can definitely cause the pelvic pain. maybe you should try more aggressive treatment or management of the IBS? fwiw, everyone i know with IBS manages it through strict scheduling (food, sleep at same time every day) and some diet restrictions.

also, i learned that there is a form of massage therapy called inter-vaginal or pelvic massage. when i lived in NJ, there was only two women in the whole state who were certified to do it. and yes, it is what it sounds like....but apparently, it works.

I was going to mention interstitial cystitis as well. Apparently a lot of doctors know little about it.

Have you ruled out fibroids?

May also want to see a gastroenterologist. I had gall bladder disease without stones - very difficult to diagnose. I had severe pain to the point that I would often stay at home to avoid being out when I would feel bad.

Keep pursuing this OP! It took me two years to get my situation diagnosed. One doctor indicated it might be psychosomatic! I was so relieved to finally get a diagnosis and get a reaffirmation that I was not crazy!

That was my thought too.

Are your periods unusually heavy?

On a side note, does the pelvic pain feel like its in the bone or more in the pelvic cradle?

Op here. It feels like it is the bladder. One doctor thinks it is interstitical cystisis (sp) another says it is bad IBS another not sure. I am going for a sonogram (vaginal) to see if it is in the reproductive area. I do have to urinate a lot but don't have an infection, although I do get a few infections a year. Thanks for responding. It is making me really depressed, irritable, etc... I just want to climb in a cave and never leave. It is worse during period - not sure if it is b/c uterus is pushing on bladder? Had a cystoscopy done a few years ago but the results were inconclusive? I need to see a therapist about this as it is completely overwhelming - i go to the doctor at least once a week for 2 years. Any psychotherapist recs in DC?

I just wanted to say hang-in-there and don't let anyone tell you it's all in your head. I find it amazing how many doctors can make little of "female" problems.

If you've been to countless doctors for 2 years and still have pain, I'd try going to a reputable acupuncturist AND chiro. IMHO.

This makes me think it might be endometriosis. I have it and I get very bad pelvic pain during my period. Sometimes during sex also, but not always. My periods were heavy (before I got on the pill). I also use the bathroom a lot. It isn't a UTI or a kidney infection but due to the endo on my bladder. It is also painful when I move my bowels (during my period).
From what I remember there is not a test to diagnosis endo. I told my gyno my symptoms and he diagnosed me. He went in via a laporoscopy (sp?) and there it was. Endo in my uterus, bladder and bowel. I can give you my gyno's number if you are interested. He is in Rockville and DC.

BTW, I also have fibroids but they are so small they dont cause any pain. But the endo..DOES!

Have you had a c-section? My friend had something similar to this for 2 years after her last child - severe pain, urinary frequency, discomfort during BMs, etc. She spent over a year going to doctors and finally found one that decided to go in to see what was going on. Turns out she had large amounts of scar tissue from her 2 c-sections that was pulling on her abdominal orgains. They cleaned it out and she's 100% better.
