She’s not doing some Jean Valjean lying to provide for her family. She’s a person of immense privilege who is lying to get more. More attention. More money. More opportunities. Much like Lori Laughlin, she didn’t need to lie. She wanted more. It is both unseemly and wrong and pointing out that other do it and get away with it or ‘no one was hurt’ doesn’t change that it is wrong. She is not losing anything but her reputation.

What she did was way worse than what Lori Laughlin did IMO. At least Lori’s motivation stemmed from a desire to help her kids. Hillary’s motivation was 100% selfishly driven by a desire for attention. Lori made a mistake and received a fair punishment. Hillary is truly sick. I can’t decide if Alec was duped and is living under her spell or if he too is so narcissistic that he can’t admit to anyone, much less himself, that he was fooled.

NP. I dont want to derail this thread and make it about Lori Laughlin but I sincerely hope this doesn't soften opinion about her wrongdoing by comparison. Like at least LL was trying to be a good mom. No.

She cashed in on her privilege all the way from scam, to how her case was handled in the courts to the ultimate FU -- reduced sentence in the jail.of.her.choice. And she'll likely bounce back in a couple of years. Tell that to those who do not have the same background or resources. Those not given fair trials and having their lives grossly affected.

I don't mean to jump on you specifically, it's one of the points I think is lost in all this with Hilaria/Hillary. Cancel culture and trial by social media is outrageous. No question. But this is the landscape we're dealing with these days, and within that landscape there is a distinct difference in how these stories are treated. Attractive white person of means catches consequences and it suddenly becomes "a witch hunt" " disgusting" "over the top" "too much" "gone too far"
Whereas if a person we really shouldn't like is caught in scandal I see three reactions: 1. let the jokes fly, SNL skits and fun late night monologues are on the way! 2. Light the torches and eliminate this person's entire life 3. "Is there a chance this person is being falsely accused or portrayed? Meh, whatever, not interested in figuring it out for a POC or a person from a lower socio-economic position, or a person who isn't the kind I like for whatever reason." There is a quick verdict/dismissal.

So what about HB? Individually, everyone has a stopping point, whether from discomfort or boredom. As many before have noted, this is a perfect storm of end-of-year/quarantine/celebrity scandal/true-life detective podcast. This will blow over and there will be questions about why we collectively cared so much. And for others whose names we don't recognize, why don't we care enough?

This.

There has been a lot of attention on abusers/scam artists of lesser celebrity. They just don't get the free pass from as many people.

I never heard from her until now, I didn’t know who she was, she wasn’t remotely relevant on Spain.
Things that I want to point out:
1) I don’t think she knows about our culture at all. Mallorca is a tourist place, where there are touristy places where no one is a local. There are many British and Germans who retire there and don’t know any word in Spanish after living in Spain for many years, they don’t tend to integrate or blend with the local community. What she talks about Spain are all stereotypes, I don’t follow her on social media, but has she talked about “Los Reyes Magos”? (The Three Wise Men), they give presents on January 6th (they’re our version of Santa Claus). If she names her children Spanish names (well, weird composed names not common here) you’d think she celebrates Spanish traditions as “Reyes Magos”, or the twelve grapes at New Years’ Eve (you eat 12 grapes on each clock bell strike at midnight).
2) Her brother wrote to her in Spanish being both Americans? Come on! And the Spanish was off, with common mistakes.
3) She never speaks more than two sentences in Spanish. Her accent is good, but her grammar and vocabulary is not, that’s why I think she avoided to talk with the Spanish press.
4) What I find most offensive of it all it’s not that she pretended to be Spanish, but that she portrayed an stereotype of “Latin” that has nothing to do with us. When I look at the way she makes up, for example, I think of a Latin girl, not a Spaniard from Spain. And I read some interviews full of stereotypes that are not even from our country. “Cielito lindo”! And she tanned and dyed her hair to look from Spain? Come on! That’s so offensive! Tell Elsa Pataky that she’s not Spanish because she’s blonde... argh.
5) No one in Spain is called Hilaria. It’s absurd.
6) A Spaniard wouldn’t give up her last name, it’s a cultural thing for us. We marry and keep our last name and we have two last names. Take Elsa Pataky, for example, she didn’t lost her last names when she married Chris Hemsworth. She’s Elsa (name) Lafuente (first surname, from her father) Medianu (second surname, from her mother). We don’t tend to have middle names (I don’t, for example, as most of my friends), so that’s even weirder that Hilaria names her children even three.

Re eating the 12 grapes at midnight: I can just imagine Alec saying “not doing it anymore, Hillary.”

A couple of things that bother me are her cries for sympathy based on her lies. Kind of like the people who shave their heads to feign cancer.

She says the moms at the park think she is the nanny. So?

She talks about not being to see her family because they are “abroad”. She must not realize that there are millions of people in the U.S. Who cannot see their families because they had to flee war, poverty or abuse in their countries. Millions who either are undocumented or are waiting for papers in order to be able to visit their families.

Why this woman who seems to have it all, a doting husband, healthy children, looks and money, needs the public’s sympathy is beyond me. Any doctors in the house to explain?

I am sure they are happy with each other.

I still don't get why it was so terrible. Yes, she may have fabricated or not about Spain, but the rest of her life is pretty great. Unlike a lot of people on DCUM, they are having sex and making babies.

Explore your tolerance for abusive people and where that is rooted.

Hilaria is not an abusive person. Please stop trivializing abuse. Hilaria may be a liar, she clearly has some mental issues, and she clearly carried on with a persona that reflected who she desperately wanted to be. Inside with compassion, though don’t excuse her lies. But she’s not an abuser and the mockery and degradations she’s facing far outweighs the crime she’s supposedly committed.

This is the ultimate “gotcha” and nothing more. And there’s a certain degree of sanctimony among all those who seem to be reveling in Hilaria’s outing.

Anybody who manipulates people is actually an abuser.

Um no. They are not. Manipulation is an aspect of abuse. Not every manipulation is undertaken by an abuser. Moreover, there is a spectrum of manipulation. Ted Bundy manipulated women. Bernie Maddof manipulated people. Scott Peterson manipulated people. Cosby manipulated people. I told my mom I liked her outfit even though I don’t like it all that much - that’s manipulated love too.

Are you not discerning enough to see the difference?
You sound unhinged, poorly informed, and hysterical. Like a mob yelling, “Burn the witch”.

Really? The "witch" idiocy again???

Go back to the "stop bullying her, why do you care so much, she didn't hurt anyone" diatribes, they are more entertaining.

Hilaria outed herself. It was right in front of us from the start: her real name, family tree, upbringing, schools, and her fake accent that came and went. I’m sure everyone who has every met her realized she was pura gringa.

I think Alec must have known as well. If not, then he must be furious.

What will you do if she/they admit to the entire thing? Detail the bathroom?

Yes, whoever this is has got to stop with the same script. LOL. Burn the witch, everyone's jealous, HB is gorgeous, everyone's poor, piling on, etc.

People don't like liars, frauds, scam artists, etc. Scam artists, frauds, liars, etc can avoid any backlash by not being it.

Not a doctor, but...

Histrionic personality disorder is one of a group of conditions called "Cluster B" or "dramatic" personality disorders. People with these disorders have intense, unstable emotions and distorted self-images. For people with histrionic personality disorder, their self-esteem depends on the approval of others and does not arise from a true feeling of self-worth. They have an overwhelming desire to be noticed, and often behave dramatically or inappropriately to get attention. The word histrionic means "dramatic or theatrical."

It would have been a smarter move than blaming and insulting everyone as they have done. Admitting to it/admission of wrong doing at this stage will gain sympathy from some people, and make it appear to be a resolve to some, but most of the public didn't like either of them enough or cared before to change their course or opinion on it. It is strange and wrong, there isn't much that can be done now given the above.

The best move now would be for them to go away, stop reading about it, stop reacting to it, even when they both resurface which AB won't have a choice given his career but to do and HB probably won't be able to not do because she likes/wants attention.

They could move "home" to Spain, most people won't recognize them there.

This reminds me of a DCUM post a couple of years back where the OP was a white woman with a white DD. OP married a Latino and was asking if it was ok for her DD to claim “Latina” in college applications because her stepdad is Latino and she speaks Spanish and was exposed to his culture.

Where do the Baldwins go from here? How does Alec resume his career and SNL gig without the he press continually bringing this up and humiliating them?

What percentage of the population of Mallorca is actually Spanish? My impression of the island was that it's mainly expats, retirees, and British and German tourists going to Magaluf to get drunk and vomit everywhere. Why wouldn't she just claim to be from Madrid or something?

Why don't you all get a life? She never said she was Latina from Latin America but a WHITE Spanish woman. She can be whatever she wants since the USA is a free nation. BTW most Latinos are also WHITE. I am blond and green eyes from Colombia same type as real Latin women Cameron Diaz or Ana De Armas. I came to the USA to attend school and married a boy from Alabama and with his dark hair I am more "gringa" than him except when people hear my accent which am very proud of.

In the USA all those Mexicans are Native Americans which DNA came from the Aztecs, just like George Lopez or Cheech Marin, and that is why they are brown. Nobody in Latin American calls indigenous people "Latinos" we call then "Indios." Even in Mexico they call them "indians" and never Latinos or Hispanics which culture, language, religion was changed when the white Spanish ruled the world and landed all over America then stole their lands and killed many of them. After that they started bringing black slaves all over the new world, who now speak Spanish, and that was long before the English arrived and did the same and that is why in the USA speak English. People use your brains or google nations or watch Argentinians or other Latin American tv shows.

Get better USA education and get your facts straight, like Europeans or Latin Americans do, or travel to Chile, Uruguay or Argentina, Latin nations whiter than the USA and learn about our real culture instead of thinking that most Mexicans or people from Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador or Bolivia are Latinos when they are also Native Americans. Do you call Filipinos "Latinos" who were also colonized by Spain and are also catholic and have Spanish names?

America=North, Central and South America.

I predict they will make a skit on SNL , over exaggerate and hit it straight on; it’s the perfect venue

The same way he recovered from the "stupid pig" incident.

He's a white man, so he can be forgiven and recover. His wife, who knows.
