HGC wait pool movement

Anonymous
For those with experience in past years-- when, if at all, do wait pool spots typically open for the HGCs? Not until the end of the summer? Do only a few spots usually become available? (I realize this may depend on the HGC.)

We're also in the wait pool. I had heard anecdotally that you don't hear until August or so -- which seems weird because they must have had people say no already, so you'd think they'd move the wait list.

I think some people find out before August because I know people who've found out before school let out and were able to tour.

Please do not wait to "hear" from the wait pool. Call and talk to the people. In this case, squeaky wheel gets the grease.

The wait pool is NOT ranked.

It is not ranked, but it is a lottery, right? If that's the case, calling shouldn't make a difference.

I never say this, but if I found out that people were getting slots by calling, would sue the school district. If they sa random lottery, it is absolutely 100% unfair to not follow the random lottery system. That's outrageous, and I think unlikely to be true.

3 years ago, we found out the week after the first round of kids had to reply. I do think it was a phone call.

They don't overadmit so I think some kids will get in soon if they haven't already.

Gentle reader,
When I say call, I am merely suggesting make a compelling case for your student's admittance. Show what they have done since taking the magnet tests, share their other test scores and other academic and extra-curricular achievements during the interim period. Show your interest and showcase your child.

Just that. I share my wisdom with you because I am a good egg (and also because my youngest has already cleared these MCPS hurdles!).

Best of luck.

Is it really a pure lottery? Our child's teacher was talking about advocating for a child on the WL.

That would be considered an appeal process to move the kid in WL into HGC. It could be a long shot though.

It's different for the MS magnets. Why is that?

Three year ago, a kid from our home school decided not going so another kid who was on the Wl from the same school was admitted. I don't know if is is a common practice but the HGC do admit students from every school in the cluster.

We heard literally a week before school started and had the make the decision within something like 24 hours. I know for sure the girl whose slot my kid took was from our home school -- although I don't know for sure whether that factor was causally or coincidentally related to my kid getting the slot.
