My husband told me my MIL booked a Flordia trip for the the last week in August and she wants him and the kids to go. I told him that's the first week of school and he said its only the first week, it doesn't matter. But I don't think they should miss a week (even the first week) of school for vacation. Would you let your kids miss the first week to go on vacation? My kids will be in 6th grade and Pre-k if that matters at all.
No way. Maybe pre-k but definitely not a 6th grader.
|
Pre K yes. 6th grade no.
6th grade is the start of middle school. Teacher expectations are going to be defined this week and the work for the quarter highlighted. |
Is the 6th grader starting in a new school?
When I was in the 6th grade I actually would have been upset to miss the first week of school. I would have been completely OK with missing any other random week.
For a trip to Florida, no. For something more educational that absolutely couldn't be scheduled at another time, possibly. But the first week is a really tough week to miss - of all the weeks of the school year that's probably the one I'd try hardest to enable my kids to attend.
Definitely the pre-K one can miss. For the older, depends on a lot of things. It's a possibility that circumstances could align -she's a great student, doesn't need to warm up to things, makes friends easily, doesn't get to see grandparents often, can keep up with the work, etc..but it is far more unlikely.
Yes for pre-k. Absolutely not for 6th grade. The first week is huge and the 6th grader would start the year behind. That's a lot of stress on a kid who would have to spend the first month trying to catch up.
No not a 6th grader. I think fine even through kindergarten but not once they hit the grades.
Yes, she'll be starting middle school. |
No way.
No way. Lines are drawn that first week of middle school! Don't want to set LO for three years of not getting in where she fits in! I say that half-heartedly, but it's totally true.
Why would your mil book a vacation involving your family without your ok?
We occasionally miss school for family trips but would not miss the first week. The first week is when expectations are set and people get to know each other, important for all ages. We actually prefer to miss the end of the week as opposed to the beginning because often Mondays are when new concepts are introduced. For us, the first week would be about the worst week all year to miss. Makes such a bad first impression.
No, not the first week. Any other week.
