Tell us your symptoms before you were dx with cancer

I'm hoping to start this thread to help others with early detection. Can you share your own symptoms or your loved one's?

My mother passed away less than a year ago of ovarian cancer. She was losing weight fast, had less appetite, was a little more tired, and suddenly could no longer have a bowel movement. By then it was stage IIIc. She was given 17 months to live but she lived 6 years.

Are you sure you don't have anxiety?

Wound on leg that would not heal. Thankfully was minor and although I have A divet in my calf, it was a fairly easy treatment.

Aunt with breast cancer: son accidentally elbowed her breast and she said something felt off about how it felt after. Stage 2 but unfortunately cam back in full force 2 years later and she passed away

Aunt with bone cancer: ache in her hip that wouldn't go away. Was told it was athritis (she was 60 so she did have some ) but felt like It was more. Turned out to be bone cancer. Has been a long 5 years. From remission to getting ready for the end and back to a recent remission

Friend who Had cancer but can't remember the term: extremely fit person but noticed she was getting easily winded and tired. Passed out after walking up a flight of stairs and a Tumor was discovered that went from her heart down to her stomach. It was pressing on her lungs which is where the shortness of breath came from. Non operable and she Had 4 different types of treatment before a last ditch effort with stem cells. She's been in remission for 6 months.

OP I am sorry for your loss and I wish everyone mentioned here good health. Thanks for starting this thread. Ovarian cancer and other hard to detect cancers run in my family so I try to stay on top of things.

To the person asking about anxiety, I think it's normal to be concerned. With cancers like ovarian cancer often someone has seemingly harmless symptoms and it's not until it's late stage that you have major symptoms. You see that happen to family members and you realize how quickly life can change. If OP weren't sleeping and functioning in life, I'd be concerned. I'd also be concerned if OP felt invincible and couldn't empathize.

No symptoms. Found it on a mammogram.

I had lost about 20 lbs over 4 months without trying; I was not really hungry; I was tired. 3 years ago (today), they found a 6 cm tumor on my kidney by accident.

Same symptoms with my dad, but he also had back and stomach pain. He was diagnosed stage 4 pancreatic and dead within 6 weeks.

Im going to contribute something positive since you sound anxious OP. My mom was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer 30 years ago. I was 11. She had less than 10% chance of surviving five years. She did 9months of chemo and has been in remission completely ever since. Every dr I have given my family history too is always in shock she is still alive. Her symptoms were first diagnosed as a bladder infection. Swollen belly, feeling pressure to pee. This went on for a few months (I dont know every detail since I was so young). A urologist finally made a diagnoses and things moved very quickly. Like within a few days she has a hysterectomy and started chemo about 4 weeks after that. Miracles happen.

I don't think the OP sounds anxious at all. This is a great idea for a thread and one I've personally been interested in.

This is a terrible thread. Also, the evidence supporting the benefits of early detection is very limited for many cancers.

Why do you think it's terrible?
