Can we see/hear in the lawn seating at Wolftrap?

Anonymous
My family wants to see (well, hear, mainly) comedian Jim Gaffigan at Wolftrap in August. Only lawn seats are left. I've never been to Wolftrap. Is it worth the price of admission to sit on the lawn? In addition to rain concerns, I am wondering if we will be able to hear the performance? Is it best to sit in the front of the lawn seating? How early would you get there for that? Thanks!

I think the lawn people are obnoxious, and refuse to buy lawn seats there. Since you asked.

There are some people who seem like ALL they do is go to Wolftrap, and they race in once the gates are opened, and stake out a four acre perimeter for themselves and their snowflake friends. Not my idea of a good time. Since you asked.

I am hoping, for your sake, that comedian events are less pathetic than music events.

I have been in the lawn once at Wolf Trap, yeah, you can hear it, but as the PP said, people race to get the best spots or save a huge area for their friends.

That being said, try to get tickets a few days prior, you may be surprised that seats will open up as time gets closer.

They have speakers for the lawn, so you can definitely hear.

Yes! The lawn at Wolf Trap is great. You can bring your own food and drink (alcohol included) and picnic on the lawn before and during shows. Sure, people line up to get the good lawn areas, but the lawn is certainly big enough.

Go for it.

How do seats open up? The site said no refunds. So if seats are sold, aren't they gone for good? I am thinking of going on Stubhub just to get some actual seats, but of course that open will be expensive.

Potential groups that don't use all the seats. Last year, I landed a ticket the day of for Huey Lewis and it was the 2nd row from the stage, and it was a crowded show. Granted, one ticket is easier than 4.

You sound like someone I'd shoo away in a heartbeat. Sometimes you can spot the killjoys in a heartbeat.

Love the lawn. Yes, we get there early, but I love hanging out, people watching, reading, having a beer, and then listening to the show.

If you are on the side lawn areas, you often cannot see the stage. The last time I went to Wolf Trap it was horrendously hot, muggy, buggy and then a thunderstorm and lightning came in. Never again. We were miserable.

+1. I purchased 2 front row seats to Huey Lewis 2 hours before showtime. It was a great show!

You sound like a bundle of fun!

FWIW I don't mind crowds or festival or ampitheater (lawn )seating so I actually LOVE Wolftrap because you can bring in absolutely anything- nothing like being able to have your favorite finger food and favorite bottle of wine while listening. I've been at the bottom of the lawn and also in the "upper deck" lawn. You can hear pretty well throughout although it is easier to chat in the upper lawn so there is plenty of that.

The lines to get in are super winding and long but they are actually very efficient about getting you in once they open the gates.

I prefer the lawn to the seats, except for that whole "rain" thing.

I think the lawn is the best place to sit. We picnic, have a glass of wine, and can hear the show just fine. That said, there is the rain issue, which I've only been caught in once.

When Wolf Trap finally figures out how to control the rain, like every other venue in the area has already, I'll be back.
