Teens and swearing

Anonymous
I was looking through DD's phone after grounding her for some not okay pictures she posted in Instagram. Looking through her texts and saved snapchats, she swears so much! It's all F this and F that, everything is shitty and everybody (including me, apparently) is a bitch.

She doesn't swear around us, so it was so surprising to find that she has such a potty mouth!

Should I talk to her about this? I don't like the fact that she's swearing so frequently and so often, but I understand that she can say what she wants to say and I have no authority over her speech.

Do your teens swear?

I swore a ton as a teen, but not in front of my parents, teachers etc.
The important distinction is that the kid knows when swearing is appropriate or not.
My kids are not yet in the cell world, but I'd be inclined to tell my kids that texting fits into the "could be seen by adults" category and should fall under the "better not to use that word" rule.

Funny parenting thing... I don't let my kids swear on Instagram, etc (family follows them)... but if they swear in real life I don't really care... unless it is directed at somebody.

Yeah. My teen swears.

Oh god, my 10 year old is swearing. Drives me nuts. I don't think I'll ever curb it entirely. Focusing in appropriate venues/social settings now.

This would bother me, too, OP, but I rarely swear.

Yes, my teens swear, but not that much - as did I at that age. I always tell my kids that I don't like it and that it's disrespectful to swear around adults, so they cannot do that. I figure that since I don't know when they are doing it and I can't control it, so there is no sense in banning it.

OP here. I'm nervous that DD (who is in HS) will influence her little brother (late elementary). He already imitates her and does everything she does. DD will be applying for colleges next year, so I'll tell her that college recruiters may look at her social media and judge her if she swears.

It just all seems to start so much younger now!

My teen swears, only slightly in front of us though, if he's re-telling a story that includes swearing. I dont say anything to him about it. My 10 year old though, he doesent swear but if he did I'd say something to him about it. Not allowed and not acceptable IMO.

Not a hill I'd die on.

The use of profanity indicates a poor vocabulary and an absence of wit.

Or some fucking bullshit like that.

Other parents are reading this... you know that right?

OP here. That was the purpose of starting this thread. I wanted other parents to read this and to answer if their teens swear and how they handle it if they do.

I guess the consensus is that I should just let it go?

Explain to her that the first thing employers do is Google a name when they get an application, and she is never going to get a job with crap like that out there.

Swearing makes people sound ignorant

Sorry, I was typing fast and was not clear. You daughter's friend's parents are reading her posts. So they will judge her based on her posts.
