I went to BTSN for my TJ kids and can assure you that the standard indoctrination is well in place at TJ as at any other school around here.

The students were reporting their experiences with racist behavior from other students and teachers while attending TJ. Toxic culture of mostly Asian students acting like no else belongs there and claiming the few black and Hispanic kids must have been beneficiaries of affirmative action - notwithstanding that the supposedly race-blind policy actually stacks the deck in favor of higher-income families who can afford to get their kids into the types of activities that make them look better on paper.

TJ should be shut down. It is worse than a Confederate school name or statue because it perpetuates ongoing racism and discrimination.

Why? Just there are too many Asian kids there? They work too hard for others to catch up?

You just exhibit another form of racial discrimination, this time against the Asians.

This is very true. My URM Daugther is a TJ Alumna, despite her good grades and test scores, she was constantly reminded that she took an Asian spot.

Shut it down. Named after a racist white and dominated by racist Asians.

I know there are programs, but has their efficacy been measured? How about encouraging more kids in AAP to take the test?

Look into FCPS’s Young Scholars program. It is great — there was a neat WaPo Magazine article several years ago.

And TJ student groups do so many events to reach out to younger kids.

My FCPS elementary doesn’t have a young acholars program, too few Black students, same issue as TJ statistically insignificant. Unfortunate some many bright young students fall through the cracks. Children of middle class parents who don’t have the money to throw at tutors and Kimon. At least not year after year. Children who in the absence of “word of mouth” networks who would greatly benefit from the extra push and mentorship.

I call BS on this. Why don't we hear this from white TJ students?

My minority child who attends TJ has experienced no racism at TJ. However, it happened daily at DC's base school. This is not a TJ problem. In our experience, the kids and teachers have been respectful and kind.

Call it BS if you will but that doesn't change the fact that my daughter and many of her black and brown friends at TJ were constantly reminded they were admitted because of affirmative action. Obviously, the perception is different for white TJ students. Reading through many of the previous comments, it's clear that this perception is prevalent in many households, so we should not be surprised when these sentiments spill over TJ hallways and classrooms. Unfortunately, for the very few gifted URM who make it to TJ, they have to carry this additional burden.

Given the topic of this thread, how could your daughter have many black and brown friends at TJ?

do 12-15 friends across multiple grades count as "many"?

I think that there is a difference between getting grief because people think you are an affirmative action admit versus some Asians thinking they are better due to their superior intelligence, work ethic, devotion to education. I think URM and others face more of the latter than the former. You see similar attitude from UMC lawyer parents as well. There's not much FCPS can do about the latter either. It is interesting to watch the South Asians and East Asians go after each other though. And their parents are even more entertaining.

That is not an acceptable way to behave without alienating others.

FCPS has one of the most racist administrations around. They have a few blacks in the administration, but all I’ve seen are mammy’s and bootlicks. The NAACP is the same in fairfax. The just want to keep white daddy happy. Atleast the NAACP in Arlington and Loudoun fight for the kids.

Yeah right, because white students aren’t discriminated against in the system of white supremacy.

There is no affirmative action in TJ admissions. Strange how posters complain there are no URM AND that people complain their kid was called an AA admit.

Can’t really understand why place s such as this shouldn’t be re-examined in light of what’s going on in the country. I’m guessing that elitist establishmentarian credentialists hope that the dust will settle soon and that their world will go on as always.
