3 Cases of Coronavirus Confirmed in MD

I heard in another thread a few days ago that somebody found some hand sanitizer at a gas station.

My DD says we should start stocking up on soap because that’ll be the next to go.

With Mark Cadiz, 65, running a fever, the couple worries not only about themselves, but about the possibility that — if they contracted the infection — they could have passed it on to others.

“They’re telling us to stay home, but nobody told me until yesterday to stay home. We were in Sacramento, we were in Martinez, we were in Oakland. We took a train home from the cruise,” Judy Cadiz said Thursday. “I really hope that we’re negative so nobody got infected.

Don’t worry, no testing means no infections.

Since their cases--so far-- are mild it is unlikely they would have been tested if they had not been contacted. Bear in mind that MD has done only 31 tests.

Supposition is that they were on the first leg of Grand Princess cruise and were contacted because they names were on the manifest.

That is my assumption. On NPR this morning they said CDC was seeking out those passengers.

And from the post yesterday:

"All three — a husband and wife in their 70s and a woman in her 50s — were on a cruise overseas and returned to Maryland Feb. 20, officials have said. They experienced flu-like symptoms shortly after arriving home, and sought medical treatment."

This contradicts 11:22 that says there were contacted by CDC to come in for testing.

But only got tested 2 days ago? Yeah sure

Well, testing was restricted so that wouldn't shock me. And if they didn't have severe symptoms, I'm glad they stayed home vs venturing out to sit in a doctor's waiting room or an ER waiting room...

They did go to a hospital

If they went to the hospital, they don't have mild illness

The benefits of contact tracing and testing: now they know to quarantine themselves.

Stay home 14 days if I think I’ve been exposed, but don’t buy two weeks of food now (that’s panic hoarding!) so I have it when I need it.

Also, wear a mask if I am sick and must obtain medical care, but the government doesn’t want me to buy masks while I am well. So I will obtain the mask to keep my coronavirus to myself how?

Exactly!!!

What is the point. Enough people have already been exposed. Every person the NY lawyer came in contact with has tested positive so far - every.single.one. This is only a matter of time.

VERY insular community.

You don't need masks. Soap works just as good, if not better than hand sanitizer. But if you NEED hand sanitizer, rumor has it that Bath & Body Works has their smelly ones.

I think sooner we all accept that we are almost all positive, sooner we can try pay closer attention to our symptoms and seek help. At this point it is not if we will get it, it is a question of when or if we are already carriers.
As for government, restricted travel was ok, but not getting tests and actually getting ready is the worst oversight of this government yet. And that is something.

People shouldn't use masks because they don't work and they're taking masks away from healthcare professionals who need them?

Please. This is obvious propaganda to avoid outcry from preventable shortage of masks.

I think we need to accept we are all going to get it and start planning how to slow the spread so we don’t reach capacity in hospitals.

P.S. fitting and fit testing is something you can learn from a 2 minute YouTube and a hundred thousand pesticide applicators and painters who never graduated high school do it every day

Another thought is that they could have been on the Nile cruise. They have been doing contact tracing on that and Egypt announced that 12 crew were found to be positive today. Testing was carried out because a passenger, a Taiwanese-American, tested positive when he returned home. Not sure if that was home to Taiwan or the US.

Sounds smart of cruise companies: cruise through infected areas

I think the message people need to get through their head is that "the government" is not going to ride in on a white horse and save everyone. You know who is responsible for you? YOU. You and your neighbors are going to need to rely on each other. The "system" is proven to be too big, too complex, and too overleveraged to support people the way people think it will in a crisis.
FEMA is great for things like "a flood" or "a tornado". A nationwide pandemic....all bets are off.
We all need to learn what we can and make our best most non panicked judgments.
