What are Leftists afraid of? If a speaker’s ideas are as stupid as they say they are, they will ring false and the Left wins.

Simple. They think people are stupid. So they don't want ideas that they disagree with floating around, because they think people are dumb and won't be able to discern good ideas from bad.

And, since they think people are dumb, they also think that dumb people need to be led and influenced in order to have the "right" ideas. They worry that dumb people will impede "progress."
