They really don't. It's been posted over and over how the VDOE reports to the Governor - and the VDOE is in charge of curriculum, among many other things.

They don't understand how education leads to the governor in Virginia, because they are not from Virginia and probably do not have kids. They are from DC, MD or CA.

I’m from VA and have two kids in public schools. The PP’s list above is 99% grievance with FCPS, not anything VDOE did.

DP. As has been stated repeatedly, the VDOE *DIRECTLY OVERSEES ALL LOCAL SCHOOL DIVISIONS*. Luckily, the Board of Education consists of Governor-appointed members, so hopefully we'll be seeing a change soon.

My neighbor (a Catholic Latina immigrant) has a DD who wanted to do Book Wars. She was actually somewhat hesitant because of the content of many of the books.

I understand that there is a segment of the population who is LGBQT, but is that the majority of the population?

It just seems off to me, as if there is an ‘agenda’ at play.

I’ve noticed the bolded too, even in younger kids’ books.

Previously I would have purchased anything that has an award sticker on it without really looking. Now I need to look at the plot and even the date. Things published 10+ years ago that won an award were actually good books, they didn’t just check some diversity box.

Np I’ve noticed it too in the books my kindergartener brings home. She gets one a week. I read A LOT to my kids and they’re seriously boring books. She said they can only pick from certain shelves.

Basically, if an author writes a book about any ‘marginalized’ group, it is an automatic bestseller and gets actively promoted by schools/libraries. Even if it is a terrible book.

The other PP is correct - I have been actively seeking out older books from authors like Hurwitz, for my avid reader.

My MS kid read The Pact for English class so I read it also. Interesting story, I guess? But it really does seem to reinforce some stereotypes about young Black men and their backgrounds and behavior. Besides that, it was just so poorly written. Sure it checks the ‘diversity’ box, but there is absolutely no good reason for my kid to be reading it in MS English. It was pretty much written at a 4th grade reading level.

I would guess that has something to do with it also. At least, in my neighborhood, I see the negative effects of such a large influx of undocumented immigrants. It will definitely affect my vote going forward.
