| Being a newer resident, wondering if this is considered to be one of the more prestigious clubs? We were asked if we were interested in joining, just wondering what the general consensus is about this club. |
Once it was very prestigious. Don't know about now. |
| Probably at the bottom of the private clubs in DC so not very. |
| Not very prestigious, but it is a nice club. They have lovely facilities but it would only be worth it to join if you work/live downtown. |
| Not prestigious. It has some good people. We love the athletic facilities, pool, sauna, etc. Chefs are good. Its comfy. Not at all a scene. |
|
Dined there with a member several times. The food was excellent.
OP, if you were asked to join, don't think about it in terms of "prestigious." Think about it in terms of do you want what it offers. P.S. Most DCUMers don't belong to the clubs in DC. |

Metropolitan Club is more "prestigious" - also stuffier, etc.
Cosmos Club is probably more "prestigious" - but same stuffiness. University Club is plenty nice to go to, has good to amazing food, a great gym, wonderful squash, and really nice people. Stuffiness factor is pretty low, yet it is still elegant. But don't join if you won't use it - it is not inexpensive. |
We do, Cosmos Club
|
I don't think its at the bottom but what do you think would at or near the top then? Cosmos? |
Cosmos? At or near the top? No. |
You can buy your way into the UC with a bachelors degree and a decent income. You can buy your way into the MC with a lot of money. You can't but your way into the Cosmos Club so I would say it is the most prestigious and exclusive club in DC. |
| I'm curious, why do people belong to clubs like these? I'm not being snarky, I just don't know what they offer. |
Definitely agree. It is not easy to be invited and you have to have substantial credentials/accomplishments in the field of science/math if I am not mistaken. Was there once and it was absolutely old guard but fabulous. |
I agree with this assessment, and we are members. However, we are not there to impress anyone. Its really not that kind of place. We use it frequently BC it fits our downtown lifestyle. We use it as a private restaurant, love the pool, kids events and the bar. You can throw private events there easily with the help of great staff. It adds a nice element to our life. Meanwhile plenty we know do belong to the MC but it is a hautier place. I don't want to always feel on pointe to go swimming, or ready to bump into senior people in my industry. The uclub is my escape from all of that. |
