DD16 does get an allowence of $10 a week. With that, she usually purchases snacks, itunes music, fast food, movies. She doesn't always spend it all that week and will save for other items (makeup, gifts , etc). Lately, she has been hitting me up for clothing whenever we are out. I would like to give her a clothing allowence in addition to what she already receives so she can budget and plan better. What do you think is an adequate amount?
She does work in the summer, so she normally takes care of her own clothes/cosmetics then, but I do buy the more expensive items such as shoes/coats, etc. TIA! |
| Stock her up once a season or calculate the cost per season and give it to her in monthly installments. |
| $500 |
| 500 for Summer and 500 for Winter. |
| I'd go with about $800 to 1 k per year. Also, you may want to raise her weekly allowance. Maybe $15 instead? Most parents I know are at the $20 to 25 week point for that age. Things are so expensive now. |
| The $10 allowance does seem low. |
Wow, I don't spend that much on myself. I'm jealous of your children. |
What is your HHI? $10 is fine is you're barely making it, but not right if you're living the high life. |
Yeah seriously that's a lot. |
| I gave my daughter $300 in the fall and $200 in the summer. That's more than I spend on myself. |
I'm at $100k. I could afford to give her a bit more per month, but trying to keep her a bit grounded. Her weekly allowence has always been based on her grade (she's in 11th grade so she gets $11/wk). It's been like that since she was in First Grade. |
This weekend we will go through all the Spring/Summer clothes again and get rid of items that no longer fit, no longer in style, or things she simply doesn't want. Most of her shopping is done at F21, H&M and Urban. If I give her $300 for summer clothes shopping, does that seem fair and reasonable? |
| I don't spend much for myself, either, but then again, I've been buying clothes for years now and I've stopped growing. I think it might be different for teen girls? |

$0
16 is old enough to get a job and earn the money for clothing. No more allowance, either. |
Yeah that is a good amount. Unknown others will disagree but I think having a clothing budget and making fiscal choices for aesthetic reasons is a good skill to have. |
