Counter height kitchen tables? Love it, hate it, will it go out of style?

Anonymous
We have a kitchen that has a smaller kitchen island. The layout is not big enough to accomodate barstools at the island (nor a counter overhand on the island). The island is our main work space. I very much want an island that has barstools, but it can't happen without major, major house renovations.

So, I was thinking about getting a kitchen table that is counter height.

Do you love yours? Does it ever seem clunky or awkward? Will it go out of fashion soon?

A friend had one. Regretted it immediately. Hard to pull up additional chairs for larger groups. Just weird.

Hated it when we had it. It's just not comfortable. We ended up always eating in our formal dining room instead of the kitchen table.

not worried about that issue at all. You can get counter height folding chairs (that look nicer than a metal folding chair) -- essentially folding barstools with backs at Bed Bath & Beyond. We can keep those in the basement... and it doesn't happen too often that we have dinner guests. You might want to tell your friend about those folding counter height chairs.

Hate. If you want counter height seating, eat at the breakfast bar.

It's just adds another 6 inches that my clown son has to fall to the floor. Not ready for this yet

my kids are a little older than yours, so they should be able to get up and down o.k. 9 and 11.

If I had older kids, maybe. But definitely not with the younger set.

They are awkward for many grown ups, too (like me).

But if you like that look and think that your family would too...that is what is important.

OP here -- this is one I'm considering. Not sure if I like the chairs. But I like the rectangular shape and the fact that it can extend out to a square that seats 8. Most of the time we'd be just four at the rectangle.

What do you think?

Just a trend. I hate sitting at bar height tables at restaurants. It is uncomfortable. But if you love it, go for it.

Ha, that's true. Not everyone has a breakfast bar. We have one now and we added one in our old house but we didn't have one for years before that.
