why did Muriel cut DCPS funding?

Anonymous
I thought DC was in ok financial shape. Is it to give money to the streetcar boondoggle?

She did cut everyone's funding, she increased a number of budgets. . I keep thinking back to Kaya Henderson testifying in front of Catania a few short months ago, "we might just let the charters do Middle School, they seem to do it well."

Even the charters are getting screwed now too it seems.

City budget deficit of $200M, not just schools. More red light cameras anyone?

She cut DCPS and DCPCS. Seems for once we are both on the same side, the mayor hates education.

As someone who didn't vote for her....I'm trying not to say "I told you so"

Two lucrative speed traps in our W3 neighborhood have been removed in the last month, so no sign of searching for revenue here.

Well, Catania is responsible for the short-sighted at-risk funding scheme now threatening Wilson and other of our best schools, so it is not as if we had much choice in last election.

We (DC) spend money faster than it comes in, no matter how fast it comes in. Even in boom times, we find a way to make a hole.

Facts aren't your strong suit, huh. Ever hear of a surplus?

Okay, I don't think "Muriel hates education" as someone mentioned. There have been conflicting reports about a budget shortfall AND a budget surplus. Part of the question has been whether the budget surplus should go in DC's rainy day fund or not. However, it does seem that DC in general spends more money than it takes in. It spends a lot of money on social services. Perhaps they should cut more there and give the money to education--both for DCPS and DCPCB as that's how people get out of poverty, not the other way around.

^ queue the lurching feeling in my stomach over a proposed - how many more hundreds of millions of dollars on a street car line? - that will do what a bus currently does! Go DC decision-makers!

I don't understand why they needed this. This will keep seniors in their homes for longer. As anyone who has tried to buy a house recently knows, inventory is really low. Now seniors will try to stay in their too-large homes, while school budgets are cut and families struggle.

I say to repeal this deduction!

Totally agree. The long term solution is to give a good education to all. Furthermore this would prevent people from leaving the district once their kids need a better school solution.
