Does your elementary school use the "stoplight"/shame system

Hell no. Our school uses Responsive Classroom, and we love it.

No, ours uses the responsive classroom system. But I honestly don't see anything wrong with colors and "shaming".

Shaming. GMAFB.

There is a positive side to knowing that you are not meeting expectations.

There is also a negative side -- when the child can do nothing to improve and the point is just to make the child feel bad.

If you think the stoplight system is "shaming," OP - you're in for a rough 12 years. Good luck.

I think they are talking about the kind where you don't just let child know they are not meeting expectations, but they post it on a big board in the classroom so everyone sees the child wearing the scarlet letter for forgetting the math book that day.

Is that like a clip system? I think it's good b/c the clip movement is based upon behavior.

I know... and I think there is a positive aspect to having it be known that you aren't meeting expectations (publicly). I don't consider that to be "bad shaming."

"Bad shaming" is when you are just putting the child in a position of being in the wrong with no way for the child to correct it. Then the only point is to damage the child's ego.

If the child is given a chance to improve and the knowledge of how to do that --- then shaming is/can be a GOOD thing.

Exactly. My child has ADHD. In K, DC was on red every single day, until diagnosed in the spring and was put on medication. Then DC was on green every day. The "stoplight" system was useless until DC was given treatment. The kids I know who struggle with being off green most/every day are not helped in any way by this system because they have other issues going on. At best the system is useless and at worst damaging.

Former teacher here and deliberately picked a school in APS that uses Responsive Classroom. In fact, our school was one of the first in the system.

No way in hell would my kids every go to a school with a stoplight system.

I didn't realize the different APS schools do it differently. How can you find out which ones use which system???? Our APS elementary uses the stoplight system and it's been hard watching my kid work through it. Mostly a good kid, but he has had a few instances of misbehavior. When you're put on red the whole class knows it and goes home and tells their parents who was on red etc. My poor kid was so devastated by being put on red that he wouldn't talk about school for a week. He also now thinks of the kids who are frequently on red as bad kids. Sometimes it may keep kids in line and I get why there needs to be a system of some sort, but it is public shaming. It's stigmatizing to be frequently on red because the whole class is made aware of your status and you're held up as an example of a bad kid.

Yes, which APS schools use it? I just watched a YouTube on it and the kids do have morning meeting, but that isn't enough to go on.

Can someone summarize Responsive Classroom?

Our school uses clips and while it's not really a problem for my DD, I'm still not a huge fan.
