| It's subjective I know but please tell me about your kids' elem school and why love it (or don't). |
| You, again? |

Chesterbrook was fine (also like Churchill Road), Longfellow was a nightmare, McLean is better than either.
Positives: Chesterbrook: I like the way it integrates AAP and SN and support those that are both. Churchill Road: Loe the fact there are more male teachers in the classrooms Haycock: Once the reno is done, it will be really nice Franklin Sherman: Hope it can maintain its relative smallness, but currently great community Kent Gardens: French Program as long as you have a French speaker at home, more laid back parents. Lemon Road: Used to be a small unsung jewel- major changes that they are handling well with little advanced notice Timber Lane: Small classes help many students, more resources due to being Title I |
OP asked about ES, not MS, but I'll still chime in to say we had experience with another MS in FCPS before Longfellow, and Longfellow was much better in our book. Yes, the principal didn't ooze warmth toward the kids, and there was a big emphasis on the latest awards won by the same group of TJ-bound kids, but the front office was friendly, the school was well-run, and we always had the sense that the administrators knew what the teachers were doing and how students should be progressing academically. Not so at our prior MS. |
| Yes, me again. If you were new to the area wouldn't you do everything you could to find the best school for your kids. |
| Ty 12:29 and 12:50! |
Each of our experiences is valid. |

kinda a vague question. FCPS has more kids in it's school system than some whole states!
But I'll take the bait. I love FCPS. My kids are/were in immersion. You can't get that in many school systems. My oldest DC will start HS at language III and two HS math classes in. yes it's a lotto, but I think it's worth it over AAP. |
| Cooper Middle School was shocking as to what a zoo it was; those little kids had older teenage-like issues. Drugs, alcohol, etc etc etc. And the admin seemed clueless to what was going on... |
As you and your kids get older, you realize that not that many people look back too fondly on middle school. It's kind of like they quarantine kids for two or three awkward years to keep them away from the general population. But since OP is only asking about elementary schools, maybe we should table the parade of MS horrors. |
| I'm sorry to say I don't like Lane Elementary. It feels very institutional and I don't like the level of communication that comes from the teacher. They send a lot of mass emails, but none that really match up with your kid and what they're doing. |
+1 Definitely. |
I'm wondering when your kids attended Cooper - early 90's? I've had three kids go through Cooper in the last seven years and each experience was great. Involved teachers and principal, really nice group of kids, laid-back parents, kind atmosphere, fantastic theater dept. Never have we ever experienced anything like what you've described. |

I have friends in Loudoun who say new elem schools have no playgrounds. It is the responsibility of the PTA to raise the funds to build one, which can take years.
I haven't confirmed this, but it sounds horrible if true. |
| Yes. It's true about the playgrounds. |
