| We went mattress shopping this weekend at one of the smaller independent mattress stores. There happened to be a floor model for sale of one of the mattresses we liked at the store(a memory foam gel mattress, not Tempurpedic). It is the same as the newer model, just last year's version and obviously has been on the floor, tested, etc. It is considerably cheaper though -- $899 vs. $1,999 -- so we are tempted. It would be a final sale, whereas the new model would have a return policy. Would you do it, or is that kind of yucky to have this mattress that tons of people have tested? |
|
No. But I'm guessing others would. It would just skeeve me out to think of people testing it out over the course of a year. I would wonder whether it was still structurally sound. And I'd worry about bedbugs.
That being said, at least you wouldn't have to worry about off-gassing! |

I did about a year ago and have never regretted it. The mattress was almost fully covered and looked fine. I didn't scan it with a black light or anything, but frankly it's covered with a mattress pad and a sheet when I sleep on it so I'm just not freaking out about it.
I'm much more grossed out by sitting in airplane seats and Metro seats and doctor's office waiting rooms. And my back feels great these days with the new mattress. I wouldn't have been able to afford the non floor model version. |
PP here. All of these things gross me out too! |
|
No, I wouldn't. But I'm a germaphobe.

I have before and have been happy with it, but that was before these bedbug outbreaks you hear so much about in the mid atlantic now. This last time we got a new one at ikea for less than $1000 and it's great.
I wouldn't be worried about structural soundness in any way. No one's had rough sex on the bed (probably) and no matter how/who has lain in it, it's been for waaaay less than the 8 hrs a night it would have gotten in anyone's home. People test them out for minutes, not hours. You could ask how long it's been on the floor for if you are worried enough. |
| No way. |
|
OP here. Not sure what I'm concerned about exactly. Certainly not concerned about structural issues, and it's not like anyone has been intimate on it or anything. I'm not concerned about bed bugs. They originate in wood furniture anyway.
If it makes any difference, as I mentioned, this was at a small independent shop, not like a Sleepy's or Mattress Discounters, so not nearly the traffic that one of those stores gets. It's just such a huge price difference. If it were just a few hundred dollars, we probably wouldn't do it. |
|
Why not! I assume you still have the standard mattress warranty so it should be fine. If you have a steamer I would give it a good steam and call it a day.
If I were you my worry would be about the no return policy. Though I have NEVER returned a mattress before. I would be concerned about that for no good reason. |
| I would and then would encase it in one of those bed bug/dust proof coverings. No dust, germs, bed bugs, etc will get out. |
| ooops PP here. I just remember I have returned a mattress but that is b/c it was delivered and did not appear to be new. This was about 10 years ago and I had paid $1,600 for a NEW mattress. That said, if I knew it was an as is purchase and I paid only $800 for it, well that would have been different. |
| OP here, yes warranty is still effective. It's a very high-quality mattress from a small, reputable company that has good reviews on Mattress Underground. |
|
pull the trigger OP before someone else does.
