We are currently Costco members and use it maybe 3-4 times a year for some staples (TP, paper towels, diapers--which are only for overnight now) and some food items that I think are cheaper there (coffee, nuts, cereal, grains). As long as we're there, we end up getting some produce and frozen foods but this isn't a regular thing.
We are also in the habit of going to Target at least once a month for assorted nonperishables (toothpaste, makeup, soap). I feel like every time we walk into Costco we drop $250, and every time we walk into Target we drop $125. At least some portion of this is impulse buys and/or stuff the kids just begged for (often less than $10 a trip, but still). We aren't super regular users of Amazon but will occasionally use it for random household items (say, a shower curtain), books, maybe some birthday or holiday gifts for our kids. Has anyone been able to replace Costco and/or Target trips with Amazon? Is it worth it? I don't think I can persuade DH that the time savings is worth $85 a year...so it would have to be something that would allow us to drop Costco membership and/or stay out of Target except for rare occasions. |
| If anything, it's cost me money because it's too easy to buy things on a whim. |
| We order a lot of stuff off amazon so prime is worth it. Ordered a new vacuum this week and got free next day delivery with prime. As heavy as it was I'm sure the shipping would have been very expensive. And we didn't have time to go out shopping for it when our other one died. |

If you're just using Amazon/Costco for bulk purchases, why not plan in advance and order it from amazon a week ahead of time? You don't need prime for that. Or set up auto-ship, again, no prime needed.
We need to drop our costco membership. I buy granola bars and gum there. That's really it. Everything else I purchase is an impulse. |

I don't like going into stores and never go to the mall, and buy practically everything online except for food. I'm not well organized and often realize I need something last minute. Prime has not saved me money compared to what I was spending before, but it has saved my sanity. Before I would carefully manage my purchases so as to accumulate enough for the free shipping. When they increased that threshold, I went to Prime and it's been reliable for my location and so freeing to not have to plan two weeks in advance for their free shipping option. So I like it. The annual $99 annually is well spent since it saves me planning headaches. |

You can now get a $1 credit to movies or kindle books if you choose regular shipping, so that can make a difference if you buy 1 or 2 things regularly. We are also using the Prime movies, so both of those have saved us from going beyond the $8 Netflix subscription.
But, no it's not saving us money. And also be sure that you're not getting fakes on Amazon when buying other products. |
| Amazon has replaced most of my Target trips. I still go to Target but usually for a specific item I can't find at Amazon or elsewhere. Sometimes for the convenience but as my reliance on Amazon has increased, my trips to Target have definitely decreased. I buy much more at Costco than you do, so it doesn't replace that for me. You might want to spend some time looking around to price compare. I rely heavily on the subscribe and save feature at amazon; I think that's where most of the savings come in, but prime definitely allows me to buy that one item that I need and have it here in 2 days. |
| The miracle of Christmas is created by Amazon Prime, and for that alone it is worth every penny. |
+1. I haven't bought a Christmas present in a brick and mortar store in years. |
Funny! Nobody is using amazon prime because it saves money. It is for time savings and convenience. |
| Amazon Prime is the meaning of life. |

No, it doesn't save me money, but it saves me a weekday trip to Target. And I don't have to drag my kids to the outlets or the mall to get them shoes. So, I agree that it is worth it, just for those things.
And in my house Santa and Amazon are one in the same. At Christmas time, I can buy the $30 toy on sale for $5 without have to buy additional items or pay for shipping. |
| It saves me money in that I go to Target les. I buy so much extra stuff at a Target, especially now when the Easter stuff is out. |
| I just watched all five seasons of The Wire on my Amazon prime account. That alone is worth the price. |

I don't have a costco membership, and I rarely (maybe 1x a year) go to Target. I buy EVERYTHING on Amazon prime.
Does it save me money? I doubt it. Does it save me time, oh yes. Plus- worth it for the video's for the kids. |
