Recline or not?

Anonymous
I do not travel often at all. Tomorrow, I am taking a 12 hour flight. I don't want to be a rude traveler to my fellow passengers, especially the one behind me. So I am uncertain if it is uncouth to recline? Please advise. Thanks.

You're overthinking this. Yes, recline. On a 12 hour flight one is expected to sleep. Everyone will be reclining. The air will smell like farts, people will take off their shoes, the lights will be off.

Recline.

Not all the way back, unless the person behind is short.

I would be far more concerned about taking in sufficient water and getting up at least once an hour to walk around to avoid deep-vein thrombosis.

Literally the only time it's OK to recline, IMHO, is on a long flight like that. 6 hrs or less, tough it out (barring legitimate back issues). Bring a pillow and light weight blanket, swallow a sleeping pill, and wake up on the flip side.

This made me LOL. So true. Recline.

Recline and bring sleep meds with you. And a blanket and socks.

Recline, but only after meal trays have all been picked up.

This reminds me of a time I took a red-eye flight from Seattle. The person in front of me reclined basically into my lap (and I'm not super tall either-- 5'8") so that every time I moved at all, I would bump her seat. She kept turning around and giving me the hairy eyeball. I really should have been more assertive and said, "LISTEN LADY! Don't recline into my GD lap and I won't disturb your precious sleep!" But I didn't. Major regret.

Anyway, I think it's fine to recline; it's not okay to basically be laying on top of someone. Just be reasonable about it, OP.
