| What time do your elementary kids have sports practice? My kindergartener is playing soccer this spring and the coach has scheduled practice times for 5pm. Getting my kid there is going to be next to impossible with my commute and I can't leave early twice a week for soccer practice. There's no one close that he can carpool with. Am I out of line responding to the coach asking to push practice back to 5:30? These kids are U6 and practice is an hour. |
|
The coach may not have a choice in terms of pushing it back -- we had to turn down a team one year because of the same situation you have described. Now DC plays ball with a coach who can't hold practice during the week so it makes my life easier in a way!

You're not out of line, depending on how you ask/frame it. As a former coach, I can say that field availability is probably limited and may be the main driver for the practice times. But if you approach the coach and explain your situation and ask about alternatives, I don't see a problem with it. If the practice times are set in stone, you may want to explore switching teams. Not framing it in a bad way but its U6 soccer shouldn't be high level and your kid deserves to get the practice time. |
Ruin everyone else's plans because you can't make the practice? Just ask to be moved to a team with a later practice.... |
I'm not trying to ruin anything for anyone. I realize these coaches are volunteers and I respect their time. I am just trying to find a workable situation for my family. I will ask about another team. |
| It's likely a hardship for the coach as well, but they get assigned the practice times due to limited field availability. Older kids have the later practice times typically. |
You're making a huge leap. |
| It would be really challenging for me to get my elementary aged kid to a 5pm practice too. For my older kid I actually just talked to the coach about having earlier practices, say 4:30. The kids are in high school now and can just take public transportation straight from school. A lot of the parents are asking for this so the coach is looking into available field space. |
| I think a better approach would be to find a different team or not play. Rearranging times is a pain. |
| I think you're a little out of line to ask for practice to be changed. There's a reason it's set for when it is -- field time is limited. I know it stinks. I'm dealing with the same thing. But it is what it is. |
And you're new to this, but if you expect your kiddo will continue to play sports, you better get used to it.
|
| I prefer a 5:00 time, but I've had plenty of time I didn't like -- 6:30 to 8:00. Don't ask to change the time, not once have I seen that happen in the over 10 seasons my kids have been on teams. Ask to change teams if you really can't make it. |
| And this is one of the reason why I have a nanny well beyond when I thought I would need one... |
Fields are at a premium and over scheduled. You are lucky it doesn't start earlier. |
| My husband coaches baseball and there are so many teams, that the fields are taken up every day of the week until 8 pm at night (unless the fields are lit and can practice later - not usually). You literally get totally random times to practice. The coaches may be able to ask for a specific day when they schedule and hope for a good time, but no coach can change the times. The kid would have to switch teams. |
