what should I NOT buy at Costco?

Anonymous
We have just been gifted a Costco membership, and I've spent the last several days googling "Trader Joe's vs Costco" in attempt to get an idea of which items might actually be cheaper at TJ's. Unfortunately, everything I've found is either more than 2 years old or was written on the West Coast. So, is there anything I shouldn't buy at Costco? I'm also interested in hearing about Costco products you've tried and really didn't like. I won't be buying produce at all; we have a share in a CSA that sends fruit as well as veggies. Thanks!

5 gallon jar of mayo

Beware of the volume you buy vs. the date of expiry. I cannot eat 400 strawberries in 3 days.

Cheese & organic meat are two of our biggies.

LOL. I think the 16-oz jar in my fridge may be over a year old...

Throw in the freezer and use for smoothies!

I can't think of anything to stay away from. I've been happy with Costco items by and large.

The only things you should not buy are things you don't need too much of. Don't buy the 2 pack of ketchup if you don't go through ketchup quickly, don't buy the 50 pack of pencils if you don't use pencils often, don't buy big packs of frozen dumplings if you don't have the space in your freezer for them. That kind of thing.

The six pack. It looks good in the store but at home it fights with the tv and beer.

dumpy women's sweaters in easter egg colors by Gloria Vanderbilt

any of the acres of not-organic (but pretty) fruits and vegetables. Unless you're a pesticide denier like my sister, who insists there's not difference to the human body when one consumes 100 lbs of pesticide residues every few years.

You like stretched out cotton sweaters in a choice of sherbet orange, barney purple, or windex blue? Knock yourself out, I guess

I have found that Costco normally has larger versions of my faves from TJs (tempura shrimp, balsamic sauce veggies), so LOVE that. Organic chix, eggs, meat, milk are all great price at Costco. For me is more of I dont want to buy and waste haf of the things we woudnt eat in time. Spices are great price at Costco too.
