short-ditance from DC 2-year-old friendly beaches

Anonymous
We are looking to take our 2-yr-old to a beach for a week at the end of June this summer... somewhere quiet, with warm water, within 1-2hr drive from downtown DC. So far I haven't had much luck finding a quite/no-college-kids/no-big-resorts/no-casinos place. Suggestions/recommendations would be much-much appreciated.

If you are up for 2.5 to 3 hours, Bethany is a good option. But there is no such thing as warm water this far up on the Atlantic.

You are not going to find anything quiet in the summer.

Lewes beach, Delaware?

North Beach. Costs a lot to get in, and it isn't large, but the short drive makes it totally worth it.

Sandy Point State Park. It's on the bay, not the ocean, but it's beachy enough for a toddler if all you're looking for is a day trip close by.

We go to Sandy Point every summer for day trips and DS has a blast. He gets to play in the sand, we have a picnic and he gets ice cream from concessions. Pretty much preschooler heaven. I knwo some folks complain about the socio-economic/class status of the crowd, but from my experiance it is just a bunch of families having fun.

We also like Assateague (which is quiet in the summer) but no hotels there, camping only. We are looking into Chincoteague this summer. Hotels there and a wildlife refugee with a beach. From waht I heard it is quiet. But no boardwalk or restaurants on the beach. Just wilderness.

My experience at Sandy Point was the bay water was really slick/oily? It didn't feel healthy to be swimming or splashing in it.

Does Chesepeake Bay have beaches where kids can play in the sand?

Lewes is great for a 2 year old.

Colonial Beach, Chesapeake Beach or St. Michaels but I would highly recommend you drive the extra distance to get to the real ocean, Lewes and Rehoboth or closest. Chincoteague is family friendly and cheaper hotels.

The "sand" is very orange and gritty too. Felt like I was at a construction site.

There are a lot of jellyfish in the bay. Yuck. I got stung several times.
