Do your kids have back pain?

Anonymous
How old were they when it started? What was the cause? We are trying to lighten the backpack and work on posture. Will have pediatrician look at in a few weeks. DC does not have severe pain-just transient mild pain that lasts anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour.

Can a tall kid get back pain when growing?

Wanted to add, I've heard building the "core" helps, but DC often refuses to do the exercises with me that help with core strength. It just is so sad to me that a 9 year old has back pain!

I don't think a nine year old should have back pain. I think you should see an orthopedist.

I agree with this. We did this with my child who was a teenager. Unfortunately, the ortho was dismissive and appeared to think it was all in DC's head. After several repeat visits, we got a second ortho opinion and he referred DC to a rheumatologist, who diagnosed autoimmune spinal arthritis.

A good ortho should know when to refer to a rheumatologist.

My Daughter had back pain aged 6. She went to see a chiropractor who had no suggestions. Then I looked at the shoes she had been wearing and noticed her feet were turning inwards with lack of support - so I changed all her shoes, sandals etc for those with built in arch support and the pain has gone.
