Our orthodontist is suggesting that our DC have a frenectomy so that our child's gap will not re-open and push the teeth back out after the braces are removed.
We are hesitating, don't want surgery if not necessary -- so looking to hear about others' experiences. Anyone done this -- if so what swayed you? If chose not to do this despite it being recommended, can you tell me why? Thanks In Advance! |

Well it's necessary if you want your kid to have perfect teeth.
Don't spend money on braces if you don't want perfect teeth. Get the frenectomy. |
| If you are going to spend the money on braces, definitely do the frenectomy. An upper lip tie can definitely cause a gap between the top front teeth. |
| It's not really Surgery with a capital S. I wouldn't hesitate. |
| You might not have needed braces if you would have done it as a baby. |
LOL! Kid does not need braces because we did not do it as a baby. Kid needs braces for a whole host of reasons. By the by, the kid already has a gap, cause momma and daddy have gaps. A big part of our hesitation is the kid loves the gap and wants to keep it. However, if it shifts and cause a problem with room for the teeth, then it has to go. |
Already has a gap. So do I.

Yes, I had it done with both my sons (who also had tongue ties corrected), because I didn't want it to mess up their teeth (and also because they were having trouble nursing) |
OP Again: To be clear -- we all have gaps. The gap is not the reason for braces -- their are other issues. The question is whether not correcting the gap/having the frenectomy is going to mess up what the braces would fix. PLUS, my DC likes the gap is really not wanting to lose it. |
It's genetic, but easily cured by doing it as a baby. |
Any gap that's left after braces can easily shift. If you're going to the trouble of braces get rid of the gap. If you leave the gap, it will allow the teeth to shit. Sort of like books on a bookshelf can shift if they aren't packed tightly enough in. |

OUr daughter had it - the procedure was very minor and done in the oral surgeon's office. We had gotten several opinions, and all agreed that it was necessary.
Every patient is different - so if your question is should you do it, get a second or third opinion. If your question is "how was it" - it was a minor procedure, quickly healed, etc. |
very helpful. Thanks. |
Thanks ! |
Not something we felt needed a "cure" -- but thanks!
