We bought a new couch about 1.5 years ago and it has been absolutely destroyed. We need a new one badly. What kind of fabric or covering should we look for that can hold up to three kids and a family that routinely spends a significant amount of time on it? We also have cats who have destroyed an arm and a back. Do we need to go leather? If so, is there a type of leather? We are more modern in terms of design -- clean lines, no rounded arms, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look? Also, microsuede is awful but we'll go that route if we really, really have to. |
I would say yes, leather is good and resilient. |
If it's not real leather, than it will peel. Places like Ashley, Marlo, Bob's, etc all peel.

Leather won't withstand the cats. I'd go for denim or twill or something rugged like that. Supposedly velvet is durable though I haven't independently verified that. |
We have a very active German Shepherd who hasn't managed to destroy this IKEA sofa:

Velour in a deep color. We have had one for 17 years and it looks new. |
We have that also. You can buy new covers for it, of various fabrics/leathers.. So just get that and spend the $100-ish every year or two to replace the upholstery. |
In the white color? Does it show dirt? |
It's easy to wipe down. (In addition to the GSD, I have 2 young kids). And the sofa comes in other colors. |
We have an IKEA sectional. Withstands the toddler and the dog. Covers are machine washable!!! That sold me right there |
The big new fabric is "performance velvet". We just bought a new sofa -- look for my thread on sofa beds from a week or two ago. Looked at Crate and Barrel, Bassett, Haverty's Hamiltons, and La-z-boy. Ended up buying the la-z-boy. My previous sofa was a high end piece of shit from Gus Modern that is practically destroyed five years later. And we are NOT rough on it -- my kid's not even two and only just entering the climbing stage and we have NO pets. |
We have a large leather sectional from lane that is 10 years old and it has held up great. Very little wear on the couch. It was about $3k originally. We have 3 kids and had 2 dogs as well. It is out main family room couch. |
No to leather. Cats will destroy it in days. Seriously. Cats treat leather as a scratching post. Don't do it.
We've gone through a lot of sofas and chairs in the last 15 years (several moves, rough cats, several rooms). The absolute best money we ever spent was on a sectional from Arhaus. 10 years later and that thing is a machine - so comfortable and i wash the cushion covers so they look like new. The construction of that sofa is a million miles above the competitors we've had (ikea, room & board, Rowe, Mitchell Gold). We did a patterned microsuede and it looks amazing. Here's the catch - we need a new sofa (updating colors) but Arhaus styles are not so clean and modern. We are struggling whether to get a less awesome sofa that looks pretty, or get the same one we already have even if the style is a little less nice. But you should check their webpage incase you like any of the styles. |
There is no fabric our cat won't scratch, so we bought an IKEA Stockholm sofa. It has a completely removable cover--not just the pillows but the arms, etc. There is a whole company devoted to selling replacement covers for IKEA sofas: http://www.bemz.com/en-us/
I wish I'd bought the larger sectional, though. |
Does the Lazy Boy have removable pillows? In other words, I don't want the ones that are sewn on. |
