Yikes, we're going to be new to all of this as of Sept. Just the tuition is hard enough. I don't want to be hounded for more.

You won't be hounded but you will be asked. That is part of the independent school culture and it shouldn't be a surprise. Everyone knows the annual fund is necessary to keep the school running. Just give $5. Other people are giving a lot, some cannot, and everyone benefits from the fund. Each family should give a stretch gift and that is individual to the different families.

At the school my children attends, the annual fund is to help "fill the gap" between tuition and operating expenses. So, we contribute roughly $1-2K per kid.
