Powerlifting for Women

Anonymous
Does anyone know where, in NOVA I could learn powerlifting? Specifically, I'm looking for a women's or coed group to train with. I am not interested in online coaches.

I've checked the barbell clubs at local Crossfit gyms but they are too expensive.

Or if you compete or train in powerlifting in the area, can you tell me how to get into it?

Power lifting or Olympic lifting? I thought crossfit was more into Olympic lifting.

I've competed in a couple of powerlifting meets. Everyone was incredibly nice, and encouraging of people at a variety of skill and experience levels. If you have the basic lifts down, you could just register for a meet and give it a go. You can find upcoming meets on www.powerliftingwatch.com.

I train in my garage, so I can't be that helpful on that end.

I can't recommend Rippetoe's Starting Strength highly enough. It goes through the mechanics of the squat, deadlift and bench press. He has periodic seminars on the basic lifts, I wonder if you might be able to find a local group through his website

OP here, I do Stronglifts 5x5. My numbers are decent, but not at all competitive. Also I've never tested my 1 rep maxes. I was hoping for some group-type coaching so I could get my numbers up before competing and also get some direction on 1 RM attempts (how much should I try for? Is my form perfect--I want it to be to protect against injury).

I can look into the Starting Strength seminars, PP.
