What do you like about Mann?

And, any areas of improvement?

the usually great teachers. The fantastic principal Liz Whisnant and the fantastic special ed coordinator, Lis Braswell. The emphasis on adjusting socially in pre -k before focusing on academics. The small size. The involved parents. The international community - only kind of diversity you will find at JKLM. The awesome art and music programs that lead to a musical or two or three depending on the grade each year. The two teachers to a classroom.

Dislikes: brain drain when kids start going private as early as 4th grade; complacency and lack of intellectual rigor starting in 2nd, when it really should start. Kids in 3rd have a harder time adjusting - I think they should lower the academic hammer and homework hammer a year earlier and raise the bar.

But set all of my kids off to an incredible start. And now we finally have a decent looking building. LOVED the fact that all the parents for all those years did not judge the book by its cover, but we are seriously starting to have a decent physical environment which delights my remaining kids and I think was LONG overdue, and they are not planning to expand the class sizes - still constrained by space and ethos, just a much cooler space...........

I like that homework is not forced and is generally discouraged. Our kids will be more than fine without burdensome homework and assignments. Teach to the population you have. Mann does it, which is exactly right.

^ that sounds amazing! Homework is generally dumb. I'd much rather have a relaxed homework policy.

Many, many thanks for your thoughtful post.
Much appreciated, very helpful.

The small classes (18 kids and 2 teaches in K this year).
The neighborhood community feel.
The fact you know ALL the kids and parents in your child's grade.
The teachers willingness to adapt to your child's level and needs.
Small group break-our sessions across all areas.

Dislike: The cliquey parents.

Will you send your kids to private for MS/HS? Aren't parents cliquey there too?

How bad is the brain drain in 4th and 5th?

It's the only upper NW public where most of the moms are pretty.

Other JKLMs have some pretty moms, but also a lot of chubby, overworked moms. Mann moms are the only ones who can pass for private school pretty.

I'm not. We've done various sports at the club and sometimes the difference in class is conveyed via beauty.

This isn't mysterious. High-earning men can afford beautiful women. This makes for attractive children. After a generation or two: intelligent, beautiful, and accomplished convene.

Tyler Cowen, ladies and gentlemen. The theory is not objectively wrong or novel (it's actually old and probably valid) and your casual observation is likely accurate (I suspect you're correct).

This is a sexist comment. What about if the woman is the bread winner and has a very stressful job? Wouldn't she look overworked? Bah!
