We are looking for an inexpensive dresser and nightstand for a guest bedroom. The finish needs to be a dark wood/epsresso. Other than World Market or Pier One where could I find something decent under $400 for the dresser, $150 for the nightstand (or less). I am not wanting to invest a ton in this little room but want something that matches the bed frame. Any ideas?
Also if you have bought bedroom furniture from World Market do you like it? |
| Just don't get ikea for the dresser...they fall apart. Ikea is not so bad for night stands. You could also try overstock.com or the pottery barn outlet. |
| Maybe get an unfinished one and stain it yourself? Or have it done at the store? Saah is in Arlington. |
Great idea. I think there is a Saah on Rockville Pike as well. Thanks! |

If you get one from Saah, check it carefully for bruises to the wood before you take it home. And be sure not to bruise it as you move it in and out of the van/wagon. The stain penetrates more deeply where there are bruises, so you will get a splotchy look. Just saying from experience....
Oh, and do use the liquid wood preparer that the stain company recommends before you apply before you apply their stain. It really does help the stain spread more evenly. We don't work for the stain company. Or you could go with paint -- maybe a white body with drawers in a color that coordinates with your room. |
| You could also try Belfort in Sterling. |
| Target? Some of their stuff is actually sturdy/decent. I also like zipping through Upscale Resale to see if they have anything that will work. I've stumbled across some amazing deals over the years. |
I thought about Target but they never have much selection at the store and I don't want to order online without seeing the item. My husband nixed the Saah idea. I was kind of excited about doing that. |
My Ikea dresser is still doing OK after nearly three years. And if it's in a guest room, then it won't get very much use--certainly not daily opening and closing of the drawers. Personally, I'd give Ikea a look. |
| I actually have had the Ikea Hemnes dresser (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70121249) for 7 years and it has held up like a champ. It started in our master bedroom and now is in the nursery (we got it in white) and takes a ton of abuse. The nightstands also are doing well although they get less abuse as they are in a guestroom. For Target, try different ones (or call) b/c they vary in who carries what. I know that the one at Skyline in VA carries much more than the one in Falls Church, for example. |

given that it is for a guest room, I would check out Ikea - or world market.
the price is right! I would caution on overstock. My SIL purchased bedroom furniture from there and it was smaller than she expected. (She did not measure - she thought ... a night stand is a night stand - how much variation could there be) |
| We also have the Ikea Hemnes dresser. We've had it for about 4 years, and it's holding up great, even with daily use. The matching nightstand is still holding up well, too. |

Consignment shops can be great places. The Post recently did an article about how many people are trying to sell things in consignment shops these days, so there are great deals to be had. And generally better quality than you're going to get at Ikea or World Market.
Don't know where you are, but there's one in Chevy Chase on Wisconsin Blvd and also one at the Nat'l Cathedral. Those two were highlighted in the article. The Chevy Chase one often has large pieces of furniture - never been to the Cathedral one but I get the impression it's more sterling silver dinnerware. |

I'd try IKEA (if you can handle putting togethor a million pieces). My dressers are holding up fine after 5 years and they are heavily used. The greatest complaint I hear is the bottom of the drawers. They are not overly sturdy, but if you don't overstuff them they are fine.
We have the MALM line. Not sure if they have a dark finish. |
| has anybody had a room and board dresser or experience with their furniture? what about cb2 dressers? |
