Terrible month for running

I will run in most conditions -- snow, rain, very cold -- but this ice has just killed my mileage for the whole month. I've had to change and shorten routes and hit the dreadmill. Feeling down about it.

Right there with you. I'm running the Rock and Roll in two weeks. That should be interesting.

Yep. It's got to get better soon.

I'm in New England and I was doing pretty well until mid-January, but I've now given up and admitted that the weather has won.

Yup, it has knocked me out too. My plan is to try to run consistently starting mid-March. Hoping for enough decent days to get some early morning runs in.

Yep. It's ridiculous. I'm doing a training program for the Cherry Blossom run and when they email the workouts, I can't just do what they say---I have to check the forecast, figure out which days this week will be the least icy, dress for 15 degree weather, try to find stretches of safe road (since all the bike paths are covered in snow/ice). I grew up in Western New York, so I'm not a wimp. But this is the worst running winter I can remember in years.

I hear ya. I am SO SICK of the treadmill. So boring. But it's still better than being out there in the serious cold or slipping on ice.

I fell on black ice a few years back and it totally killed my marathon training for Boston. I was so pissed, to go from running 20-milers with no issues to running 3 miles in extreme pain. So I'm super cautious about ice.

I was injured in mid January so I haven't run in 6 weeks. If I had to get injured, I'm glad it was now, since I likely wouldn't be getting too much running in anyway!

Agreed. I am signed up to run a 10-miler on March 21, and in hindsight, it was kind of silly not to expect this since that is, after all, the first day of spring. Next year would hold out for an April-May race.

I did an 8-mile run indoors yesterday which I can't stand.

I agree - I'll run in a little rain, or some cold, but all this ice and unshoveled walks, and suuuuper cold days are making it hard.

Wimps. Get out there. No more excuses

Yup. This is crap. I don't mind cold, wind, etc., but I'm not about to risk slipping on ice and getting injured. Thank goodness I've kept up my cheapo LA Fitness membership! As sucky as the treadmill is, it's better than nothing, and the child care is an added bonus.

Also very glad I signed up for an early May half, and not the Rock and Roll. Hoping I've put enough good runs in to be on pace for the CB10.

Another Cherry Blossom runner here. I always think people in the gym must think I'm a freak for running out the treadmill time limit and then restarting and continuing to run. Damn this winter preventing outside long runs!

How can you do long runs on a treadmill? More than a few miles and I start to go crazy, even with music.

I did a 20-miler on a treadmill once during an ice storm. It sucked, but I can read magazines while I run, and there was football and golf on TV. Compared to that, 8 or 10 miles isn't terrible. the boredom spurs me on to run faster so I can get it over with.
