Tastiest grocery store eggs

Anonymous
Does anybody have a recommendation for grocery store bought eggs (organic, free range, etc) that taste as good as fresh local eggs (or at least close)?

Thanks!

Yep. Vital Farms -- they have several variants (organic vs non-gmo vs conventional) which carry slightly different branding and pricing. But they are as close to truly pastured eggs as you can get IMO from the grocery store. Love them!

FYI -- they average about $6 per dozen.

My farmers market people (http://www.twinspringsfruitfarm.com/market-schedule/) bring eggs from this farm in PA- http://weikertseggfarm.com/ - that are under $3/dozen. Not free range, and the chickens are still indoors mostly it seems, but cage free feels better to me than many grocery store options. I get Trader Joe's cage free eggs otherwise.

The worst have been the whole foods eggs, oddly. Didn't taste great in my omelet, and were horrible to peel when boiled.

Vital Farms are the the best store bought pastured eggs. Organic Valley eggs are good, but not exactly pastured.

When the eggs are hard to peel, they are the freshest. Keep them for a couple of days in the fridge, and peeling will become easier. I grew up on the farm.

I think the Eggland's Best eggs taste better than most. Definitely better than the organic eggs I just bought from Costco.

We get the pasture-raised ones from MOM. I don't know the name but they're on the bottom shelf, they're from a farm in Pennsylvania, and I think it has the word "Jehovah" in the name. There a little over $5.

DS complains when we get anything else.

BTW, does anyone else think that some egg producers are trying to capitalize on confusion by touting that their eggs are "pasteurized," and charging more, thinking people don't know pasteurized from pasture-raised?

I find brown eggs smellier than the white ones. The best tasting eggs for me are Phils eggs and Vital farms ( pricey!) from Whole foods.

Jehovah Jireh from Maryland. I think you can only get them at mom's, so they're not really "grocery store" eggs. Definitely a small local farm that happens to be distributed at one small store

No, but I do think that advertising "cage free" or "Free roaming" is a way to try to cash in on people's ignorance. Just because a nasty chicken house has no cages to keep chickens individually confined (and therefore is cage free) does not mean it's a better egg. The jens are still likely living in the dark, fed only on likely suspect-quality grain feed, and producing less nutritious eggs. But it's got a buzzword on the label, so you pay a premium. Same thing to a slightly lesser degree even for "organic" eggs.

There's a brand I get at Whole Foods, but I can't remember what it is. It has a little newsletter in it and the box is cardboard. They're really good and I quit buying anything else.

we really like the Pete and Gerry's eggs. In my experience, the best eggs usually have a nice thick shell.

+1. I go out of my way to buy bread, milk, and eggs from MOMs.

The organic eggs from Trader Joe's are the best easily available grocery store eggs I've gotten around here.
