Unfortunately, many kids on Achilles teams are playing up one year. It is not because they are advanced players, but rather Achilles doesn't have enough kids. This is true not only for MLS Next, but also for EDP. So, for example, take a U17 team -- they might only have a handful of kids who, by age, should be playing U17, but not enough kids for a team. So they field a U17 team by adding kids who should be playing U16. Achilles retains the U17 kids and the U16 kids (and their parents) think it is great that their kids are playing up one year. That is until the season gets underway, and the losses start mounting, then the kids (and especially their parents) realize that the competition is too steep. Everyone gets frustrated and deflated -- the kids work hard, but there is a reason why you should play with your age group.

MLS Next doesn’t have U18 across the board; only MLS academies have U18 teams, which actually compete in the U19 division. It may not seem logical, but that’s how they structure it.

As for Achilles U16, they are as close as you can get to a true 2009 team, which is the correct age group. In fact, they’ve seem tongave added a number of 2009-born players this year.

The situation with Achilles U19 is more concerning, as it reflects the club’s struggles in maintaining and developing talent.

So, clearly, the underwhelming results from Achilles have nothing to do with the talent of the kids—it's all thanks to the top-notch coaching and brilliant leadership.
