+1. The sad thing is that his narcissism doesn't allow him to feel that pain in the achilles. He's a business owner who has a passion to play soccer. True coach, meh?

Sal's immaturity and arrogance applies to his coaching at SJC. Screams on the side lines, says derogatory things to players and doesn't really create a team atmosphere. His style of 'coaching' is the same as what others have said about his Achilles teams. Focus is on the top players, doesn't really concern himself with development of the whole team, puts only the top players out, sometimes to the detriment of the game. Not exactly a role model or coach that develops talent in the players for the long-term to create a solid team and win championships.

I've seen this on display 1st hand as well. We would never let our kid play for him, he sets a horrible example for kids.

I would not feel comfortable with a person like Sal in a position of influence or authority over my kids.

What are Achilles Home/Practice fields?

The club is really only for serious players, and it isn't for every personality. But my son likes the intensity of it. Even at younger ages, kids can see through the "everyone gets a trophy" places that make parents feel good but don't teach the kids to play better. When Sal gives a compliment, you know it is well deserved. When he yells, you know he expects you to work harder. This probably seems harsh to some based on our modern, softer standards but it isn't any more extreme than the coaches I had growing up. It is very much focused on building technical skills and certainly not monstrous like some are making it out to be. We've found the other families and the community -- which is made up of hardcore soccer people to be sure -- to be welcoming and nurturing.

Keep thinking that, Sal. So many players left the club because they were not serious players, couldn't tolerate some loud vocal feedback and all wanted a trophy. I don't think so. The players were finished with the berating, lack of development and blatant lack of commitment to their teams. Parents were also not going to pay a few thousand for that experience. It's time to take a look in the mirror.

This sounds like the Coach Mitch scene as well.

Ha.

Google Stockholm syndrome or look in a mirror.

Those who know the game and know Achilles also know this is not a place for serious players to develop.

The style of play at Achilles is awful. Sal does not inspire players to perform but criticises only to fulfil his inner bully. The club management border on chaotic in the best of times. There is a reason his coaches and players flee whenever they get a chance. His college placement list is a bit of a stretch (he takes credit for any kid who did so much as a summer camp despite them playing with another team the rest of the year).

But keep telling yourself the opponents are just participation trophy seekers if that helps numb what it is Sal is doing to your kid.

I don't know who Coach Mitch is, but I can't believe there is another coach like coach Sal out there. Thanks for the warning!

He runs DCYFC - not as competitive as Achilles, but same idea. Yelly coach who is focused only on one small group and is generally defensive about everything.
