Starting next year, ESPN could help broker an agreement because Disney has the right to air games for both the SEC and ACC, but I don't see why they'd choose to pay Clemson three times as much for broadcast rights that they already own |
It is immaterial. The Big Ten schools won't get a split of Washington's research contracts and Washington's research contracts won't be affected at all by joining the Big Ten. Washington and the Big 10 might (or might not) benefit financially from Washington joining the athletics conference based on commercial upside This is largely related to football. |
Wouldn't the University of Washington--as a Big Ten Conference member--benefit from research cooperation among all conference member schools ? May lead to receiving additional research funding and additional research projects ? |
The B1G as an athletic conference has nothing to do with that. The CIC/AAU as research consortiums, could. |
Yes, that is what I understood to be the case. Another poster seems to have latched onto a bit of a misinterpretation of my earlier post about the University of Washington's status as a research powerhouse. Such status will add to the academic prestige of the Big Ten Conference. The Big Ten Conference is particular about admitting only AAU member schools. |

Lots of silence today after a flurry of news yesterday regarding expansion related rumors.
No denials regarding multiple reports about FSU and the $300 million negotiated exit fee. The silence is deafening. Something is in the works. No way that Pac-12 member schools are staying put if they have any other reasonable option. Arizona Board of regents is meeting now to discuss future conference affiliation for 3 Arizona public universities (NAU, ASU, & U Arizona). Many think that the Board of Regents is trying to negotiate a package deal for ASU & U Arizona to move together to the Big 12 Conference. May even broach the subject as to whether Big 12 has any interest in NAU (Northern Arizona university located in Flagstaff.) U Oregon & U Washington want to be offered by the Big Ten Conference, but may be talking to the Big 12 right now. |
|
A major problem with the Pac-12 media deal based primarily on Apple streaming and subscriptions to Apple streaming services is that the top recruits are likely to shun Pac-12 recruiting efforts which will lead to a deterioration of the quality of football played by Pac-12 teams.
In college football, recruiting talented players is crucial to developing a good football program. The top recruits want to be visible on standard TV--not confined to viewers who subscribe to Apple's streaming service. |

The Athletic reports that a subgroup of Big Ten university presidents is meeting to discuss expansion by 2 or 4 schools. The four schools under consideration are all Pac-12 universities:
U Washington U Oregon Stanford UCal-Berkeley Adding all 4 schools makes sense since all 4 can be brought in on a gradual scale over several years (maybe 6 years) until eligible for a full payout. If the Big Ten's vision is to be the coast-to-coast conference, adding these 4 schools, in addition to the already committed USC & UCLA, would sew up the west coast for the Big Ten. Better to move now as U Washington & U Oregon are likely Big 12 target schools. |
|
Adding the above listed 4 west coast schools would enable the Big Ten Conference to grow to 24 member schools in the near future. Football could then be divided up into 4 six team divisions with the West Coast Division consisting of the 6 former Pac-12 schools (USC, UCLA, Stanford, UCal-Berkeley, U Washington, & U Oregon). Will maintain rivalries & reasonable travel for teams.
Adding these 4 teams would push the number of Big Ten Conference member schools to 20. Speculation as to the next 4 schools: Notre Dame Georgia Tech (would only happen if Clemson & FSU leave the ACC) UNC (only if Clemson & FSU leave ACC) Virginia (only if Clemson & FSU leave ACC) University of Utah U Florida (if U FLA leaves SEC due to SEC admitting in-state recruiting competition from FSU & U Miami). Duke ??? U Pittsburgh ??? U Miami ??? If the Big Ten Conference wants to expand to 24 teams made up of three 8 team divisions, then adding AAU members ASU & U Arizona becomes a possiblity. |
I always thought of the Arizona schools as a better fit, athletically and academically for the Big 12. Particularly is they lose out on Wash and Oregon. |

Well written article. Big Ten presidents will want to encourage stability of the SEC (no question there), the Big 12, and the ACC as some may raise antitrust concerns if several conferences collapse leaving only two dominant mega-conferences. |
Agree. But it may be in the best interests of the SEC & of the Big Ten Conference to avoid any harm to the ACC, thereby making expansion in the West more likely. Could be political & popular backlash if the ACC dissolves into a secondary conference. |
| By adding the 4 Pac-12 schools (Wash, Oregon, Stanford, & Cal) currently under discussion, the Big Ten Conference is likely to be viewed in a very positive light--almost as a savior. And, if the Big ten doesn't rescue U Washington & U Oregon, then the Big 12--and possibly the SEC--will. |
It depends on who is doing the viewing. I doubt OSU and WSU will view it that way |
