Sidwell College Admissions This Year

My own kid came away with several acceptances and waitlists yesterday and we were absolutely stunned given our diminished expectations. It seems like everything is falling into place for many kids. This may turn out to be a very strong year. One thing is clear; I have absolutely no clue about how this whole process really works, despite having gone through it for the last year and a half. I am more confused than ever. And, truthfully, I am a bit embarrassed by how much mindshare I invested in it amid more consequential things like a global pandemic and a war in a Europe.

At the end of the day, I am grateful, especially for the relentless effort of the Sidwell CCO.

I feel happy for you and your child and congratulations! From what I know Asian students are generally not doing well in Sidwell this year. If you are Asian and your child is interested in STEM, Sidwell is not a good choice in terms of college admission.

Let me give you some breaking news. Naviance is totally and I mean completely worthless. My kid was a SHOE IN (and is no one even close has ever been denied) for 12 colleges that he was rejected/WL for. Naviance is from an era that no longer exists. Its all song and dance and grandma was hispanic and I wrote a book my parents published and am TO. Congrats! you are in everywhere!

In seriousness, forget Naviance. This was our first time through the hellhole of college admissions and we thought it was a realistic guide since it used data from our high school. It was worse than useless, it was dangerously useless. They should just take it offline.

Yes, Naviance was a poor predictor, but that "song and dance" line is completely fallacious and fueled by bitterness (which I get). It's OK to be disappointed and frustrated, but don't make crap up to justify your loss. And, consider maybe part of the loss was one of extra privilege that had been previously awarded to kids just because they attended that school.

I am sorry your kid is disappointed. That stinks. I get it.

Maybe that is why SFS does not use Naviance, if I am correct on that. Maybe they were right along despite the fussing about it on here.

They do now. They changed their policy for the class of ‘23.

For all the hand wringing about high stats Asian kids getting rejected from top schools, the only kid who got into an Ivy, according to the Sidwell IG, is … you guessed it… Asian.

Congrats!!! Parent of magnet public school here, and had similar trajectory. It all looked pretty mediocre until about a week ago, and then this Thursday was a delightful surprise. But, two of the ones I was sure she'd get into were WL at one competitive school where she had gotten very positive departmental feedback and at a true safety a limited program rejection and kind of unresponsive nothing for the general school after they made her a finalist for their elite scholarship (rolling admissions). Bizarre. Glad we spread the net a little wide but also glad we didn't do the 20 app thing. 14 was plenty for a kid who was still feeling her way around different program interests. 10 would have been fine otherwise.

Yeah. That person is all over this forum with that and same is true at our VA public. When Asian parents “tiger”, it’s acceptable and cultural. When white patents do it it’s helicoptering and abusive. So over the college admissions game.

Lots of URM Ivy admits from Sidwell.

He is admitted by ROTC, and is not a STEM kid.

Asian ROTC is a seriously strong hook. Excellent strategy.

I can only assume you live under a rock. The denigration of Asian parents is unrelenting.

Naviance is indeed worthless. It ought to have an asterisks next to every athletic recruit, legacy, and URM -- some kids would have ***. And actually, probably an asterisk next to every name that didn't require financial aid forms (i.e. loaded), as need-blind is fake and we all know it -- a couple of kids would have ****!

Bragging about waitlists is seriously sad and pathetic. Please do not do this in real life.
