PP teaching kindergarten. We haven’t even logged into laptops. I’m using the smartboard for learning videos and Google slides to teach but nothing on computers yet. |
Thanks for the info. I'm not against K kids learning to use computers properly, but laptops coming and going daily from school seems ridiculous to me. |
Laptops are the new norm. Paper notebooks are slowly going away. The kids use computers to take notes etc in college. The high schoolers do the same -- except for the teacher that demand it be hand written - because that make it harder to cheat.... Yah.....
We had a huge issue when covid hit because so many teachers aren't really integrating technology. They use computers as a word processor. Computers are wonderful tools. They should be an integral part of every class and grade. I am thrilled to hear K will finally be using laptops. If all they do is carry it back and forth -- then you have something to complain about. They should be used every day. |
I respectfully disagree with you. It's fine to teach kindergartners how to use laptops and it's fine to use them for 15-30 minutes a day, but, no they should not replace reading books and writing on paper. |
!
Am I the only one that thinks it is ridiculous for a K kid to be relying on an individual laptop in school? I was a K teacher and I find this appalling. What are they missing while staring at a screen? You are so lucky to have not had a Kindergartner last year try doing Kindergarten fully on a laptop. Laptop for Virtual and then Laptops when they finally got to school. My child who was so excited for school before K started refusing school last year and we have already had an issue this year. My child had to carry their laptop last year and the damn thing was a 2014 Dell that was way heavy for my 35 pound child. |
I *dis*respectfully disagree with PP. Paper and pencil is much better for retention and vastly superior to laptops except perhaps for SN kids who can’t write. Clueless parents/teachers/admin like PP are all like “Our kids won’t be prepared for the real world without spending hours on the computer at age 5!!!” Give me a break. Plenty of respected scientists and engineers did not even touch computers in their formative years, but managed to get STEM PhDs |
Yes, Steve Jobs famously did not let his own kids use an iPad. He knew that the skills required to design and build computers and also to program them are gained by doing hands on work and being off screens. |
I read an article that said that the parents in Silicon Valley are discouraging their kids to use computers so much. I have a friend whose son lives there and she says this is true of her grandchildren. They want the kids to play. |
Haven't these articles been around for almost a decade now? Computing skills are logic skills. Those are best learned in middle school (the developing brain is going to be a little hit or miss on them before that). Until then, just teach the kids tons of content about their surroundings and give them hands on experiences to begin to abstract from. |
+1 And, let's face it--most of them are getting plenty of screen time at home. I'm not against computer instruction at school--but it should be limited. Teach them to keyboard and the basics, but K with their own laptops? I taught K. I shudder to think of what the kids are missing. Watching a video of plants growing is not the same as planting a seed and watching it sprout. |
+1000 |
A k kid learning to log onto a computer is NOT logic skills. Using a keyboard is NOT logic. It is a skill that will more easily be picked up later in life and the attention used to watch animation/video is a different kind of attention than that used to look at still images not to mention near vs far distance sight needed for far point vs near point seeing. We are literally developing kids brains WRONG when using technology early. Read some research before you act like you know something. If you can’t I have plenty of links for you |
When I was a kid we wrote on a desk slate with chalk and I turned out very smart! Get rid of these learning palaces with their laptops and air conditioning and windows. If a concrete block box with a corrugated metal roof was good enough for me, it’s good enough for everyone! |
I teach K. My district insists that laptops go back and forth daily. Fine. I will comply. But we'll only be using them once or twice a week. |
Parents are not allowed on the bus or in the school building. |
