I don't understand. You pronounce Berry to rhyme with the Fry? Like I had Straw Bries and French Fries?

more like straw-bree

That’s the proper way to say it

It seems like people either say or fall into the camps of -

“Strawberry” fast and making it all as one, often with the leaning on berry sounding more like the word ‘bury’
“Straw-berry” turning it to two
“Straw-ber-ry”making it into three, again I often can hear ‘bury’ vs. ‘berry’

Curse you, OP. I read the title and have spent the better part of the day trying to figure out how the hell strawberry could ever be a one syllable word.

The speed with which you say a word has no bearing on the number of syllables.

3 syllables for me, and berry definitely sounds more like berry than bury. I grew up in Appalachia with parents from the deep South and Midwest.

But when my dad is being silly (which is often) he'll call them strawbs or strawbrees in a somewhat affect voice. He also likes to say raaahsbree for raspberry.
