Here's the reality: nothing that you do, as an individual, will reduce or extend the length of this pandemic.

It's been 18 months; life can no longer be put on hold

YOU are the reason this will go on for another two years. OF COURSE, you can do so much as an individual. Get vaccinated, wear a mask, don't go to super spreader events. HOW ARE WE STILL REPEATING THIS!!!!!!!?????

Because that's what we've been doing for 18 months, and it hasn't worked.

Because nothing that my family does is going to change what people in Florida or Mississippi or Texas do.

Because no matter 'goals' are set by the decision makers, they keep changing.

I'm not going to sacrifice literally YEARS of my children's childhood for a disease which doesn't really pose us any harm, especially when the few people we need to protect won't actually protect themselves?

No, I'm vaxxed. Spouse is vaxxed. One child is vaxxed and the other will be when they turn 12.

But I've moved on.

Your life philosophy sucks.

DP. This is reality. Covid is endemic. It is not going away. We’re all going to develop immunity somehow, whether through vaccination or infection, or both. An unvaccinated teen is at lower risk than a vaccinated adult. The risk to a vaccinated teen with no risk factors is miniscule. We’re not doing our kids any favors by isolating them away from covid, and other diseases, for that matter. Better that they develop immunity while they’re young and at lower risk.

DP. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2021/07/28/breakthrough-covid-19-infections-can-lead-long-term-symptoms-study/5399083001/

In reply to the bolded, you obviously know that people have died from Covid. Maybe you'll fully recover without longer-lasting consequences if you get sick. But if you spread it to a person at higher risk, the outcome for them could be dire.

This article might help: https://www.webmd.com/vaccines/covid-19-vaccine/news/20210816/vaccines-wane-system-fights-delta

Will you also quiz for other vaccines, like meningitis? Now THAT is a scary illness.

Glad someone has sense. You foks on here are nuts. HUGE NO even if it was still going on, if it were my child.

You miss the point. Coach nixed because of quarantining, not because they think these kids are at risk. They're not. The biggest risk they face is senselelly having to miss school and games because they were near another teenager who had coronavirus.

Fascinating discourse.

I have a pretty middle of the road risk tolerance and we have been largely living our lives- masked where it makes sense and avoiding crowds unless there is a good reason.

One thing that I think is missing is that it isn't only about whether your own child is at risk. It is about whether your child getting infected could put others at risk. Do I worry about my vaxxed 14yo getting COVID? No. Do I worry about my vaxxed 14yo getting COVID and transmitting it to my high risk mother? Absolutely.

Agreed completely. I wish there was a way of taking a poll to determine how many people genuinely feel as concerned as DCUM makes me feel I should be. Look - we are doing our part - we are vaxxed - its time to move on!

NP. I think this poster makes a lot of sense. Particularly the bolded. Is your life philosophy you should keep gnashing and wailing to try to get tens of millions of people do what you want and in the mean time be miserable? I reject that life philisophy.

I do think we all have an obligation to vote, speak up to our elected officials, speak up in situations with friends and family who trust our opinion and will listen. If PP is doing that, then leave her alone.

+10000 - vaccinated = move on

ENOUGH!

I was a bit surprised everyone invited accepted. But they did.

That's because 'DCUM isn't Real Life' and about 98% of the world has returned to pre-pandemic times, even if the cautious, educated, and science-believing DMV.

And that's a good thing. The pearl-clutching COVID forever crowd only lives in places like DCUM or Twitter, but not in real life

THANK GOD! I genuinely cringe every time I open this site and think to myself am I supposed to be as worried as these people?

+1. Exactly this. We’re vaxxed, kids under 12 are not. They will be once the rules change or they turn 12. Until then, c’est la vie. We are doing sleepovers, play dates, vacations, amusement parks, restaurants, you name it. Masks on where mandated (like going through the airport) but otherwise it’s back to normal.

+1000 we were in a restaurant the other day and I thought about this board and thought to myself to the people on here not understand that people are vaxxed and living out here! The only place where they will not allow you in a school for back to school night apparently!

Unless you live in Vermont cases are not low.

meh, the word 'low' is subjective. Vermont and Hawaii are the 'lowest' on the list, but that doesn't mean that MD and DC aren't low. They still are

CDC puts DC in the category of “high transmission” which is the highest. And Montgomery County is “substantial transmission” which is the second worst. But then again so is most of the country.

Or someone else’s high risk mother.

Just said no to my vaxxed 14 yr old who has asthma. Even as a teenager whenever she catches anything she ends up sicker than most people, and sometimes we still have to take trips to the emergency room. Just that was enough for me to say no.
Anonymous
Glad the coach nixed it. Delta is spreading like wildfire and vaccinated people are getting it and transmitting it. The kids are unlikely to get really sick, but their younger unvax'd sibs could as could their grandparents or others whose vaccine effectiveness is waning.

But those thresholds are still arbitrary and the analysis/labelling is still subjective.

CDC also says no alcohol for women of child bearing age.

CDC also says no raw food, including sushi....ever

CDC says no medium rare steaks.

My point is that they have established themselves as an org with an incredible risk-adverse approach to life, an approach, if followed, sacrifices some of the joy of living (seriously, who wants a well done steak w/ ice water?)

So view their labeling through that lens.
