The police should be fired, no question about that. Considering OP’s q and the fact that this is a MCPS forum, I chose to focus on the MCPS; it’s employees and response to the incident. |

I work ar ESS - it is a great school. The families are supportive and friendly. The staff is great.
The administrator who was put on leave, was able to address every student by name. She made great work-around during covid finding ways to maintain community feel.. Staff loves her and are sad that she has been lost to another mcps school. They are getting a real gem, |
Agree the police should be terminated but I also feel they need better training to know how to better handle situations like this if it isn't already clear to them. Sure, I'd like to think if I were there I'd stand up to the cops too, but in this day and age with cops outright killing people for almost no reason I can also understand why they might steer clear of a triggered police officer. |
Long time ESS parent here. You’re correct that the Assistant Principal did a lot of good things for ESS in the short time she was there. I wish her the best. She also made an immense, grievous mistake for which there is no excuse. Now, a child carries trauma heavier than anyone—grown or young—should ever have to bear. And MCPS’s stance is that this is all just fine. The principal’s refusal to acknowledge the nightmare that happened on his watch continues to harm our community and worsen fractures among staff, who I will tell you are people who have helped me raise my children and to whom I am tremendously grateful. As people who hold responsibility for this community and safeguarding the children in it, you and I can both acknowledge that what happened was wrong and unacceptable. Reckoning with it *ought* to be uncomfortable—for you and for me and for everyone in this community whose values have been tested. Many have failed that test. I stand with my child’s classmate and his mother. |
If ever there was a tone-deaf response, this would be it. |
Why tone-deaf? I appreciated hearing the perspective of someone who actually knows and works with her. And OP's question was about the school in general. |
Agree with you here. I don't know the whole story but it sure sounds like the police are at fault here. The administrator may not have done what you'd hope but it's not their job to train or police the police. |
The police were at fault but so was the school. "Officers can you join me in the hall?" Just get them away from the kid who they have no ability to deal with. |
If I had to pick a school in MCPS that was going to have this type of issue I would have guessed a silver spring school and then ESS would have been my first guess. But yah I’m sure it is a lovely school filled with future doctors and lawyers

A child was abused by police. Most folks would not consider that a prime opportunity for gloating and mocking, but you do you I guess. |
My kids actually went to ESS, and I was flabbergasted that something like that could happen at our neighborhood school. It didn’t fit with anything we’d experienced there. |
What an absolutely horrible thing to say. |
yeah, well, DCUM gonna DCUM. |
| I would really appreciate honest and objective feedback about ESS. The reviews about the school are sketchy and old. The academic rating is also kind of below or borderline of the MC band. How safe is the school and how accommodating and patient are the teachers towards children? My son is four and I am wondering if having him here will have a well-rounded impact on him. Is Sligo Creek a better option? Thank you all , I will be reading your comments. |
