Long time ESS parent here. You’re correct that the Assistant Principal did a lot of good things for ESS in the short time she was there. I wish her the best. She also made an immense, grievous mistake for which there is no excuse. Now, a child carries trauma heavier than anyone—grown or young—should ever have to bear. And MCPS’s stance is that this is all just fine. The principal’s refusal to acknowledge the nightmare that happened on his watch continues to harm our community and worsen fractures among staff, who I will tell you are people who have helped me raise my children and to whom I am tremendously grateful.

As people who hold responsibility for this community and safeguarding the children in it, you and I can both acknowledge that what happened was wrong and unacceptable. Reckoning with it *ought* to be uncomfortable—for you and for me and for everyone in this community whose values have been tested. Many have failed that test.
