You are a slave unless you are wealthy

What if you have an elderly parent to care for? You cannot just move to a new country.

Here come the excuse makers. They always have a reason they can’t do something…

I see. You would leave your elderly parent who needs your assistance daily because you are selfish.

Now you are lucky to get out by 65, if you live that long. Life is getting worse not better and corporate America covers it up with plastic crap we think we want, but dont

100 years ago, the average life expectancy was ~50. There was essentially no safety net (welfare, SS, etc.).

As for retirement age, very few have ever been able to retire at 50.

+1.

Quit. Find/make your own opportunities. Start a small business. Live where you want.

The only thing holding you back is your own fear and self pity.

Time and health are wealth beyond measure. Find a career that lets you have both. I make high 5 figures but summers off and no more than 40 hours (Union). I can make as high as 6 figures + pension etc. Healthcare

It sounds like you have a job. That's great. Now, put on your best attitude, work hard, make your boss look good, go above and beyond, ask to do more, and be polite and on time. If you do those things consistently, you will get noticed and be promoted. It sounds like you have a hole to dig out of but you can do it. You sound smart and motivated--a lot of raising your salary is just hard work. I would not go back to school unless you have no degree, but it sounds like you do. Give yourself a pep talk and really work hard.

Also, keep your expenses low and don't worry about keeping up with anyone. You can live a good life on a lower income.

Thanks. Unfortunately raises are not a possibility, though there's a slim chance I could be promoted to management. But honestly that sounds very stressful and not sure that I would want it. There's just me. I will not be getting married, am not going to ever have a second income.

I do what you say but sometimes I feel just hopeless. I wish I could live in an less expensive area, but I couldn't get any work. I just can't stand knowing that I don't really have any choice in anything. I have to work. I will work very likely until the day I die unless people won't hire me, which is a good possibility. If I don't work, I become homeless. So really I'm a slave to wanting air conditioning, decent food and a roof over my head. I could be homeless and be "Free" but that's not much freedom.

How old are you? How much do you owe? How much do you make? How many people live in your abode?

OP- if you post your stats, we can help you. You can get out of this (it may take some work on your part).

You need to work 2 jobs- any jobs, to get out of debt. It's ok to work a little harder 5-10 years and then take it easy. You feel less of a 'slave' if you have some investments growing for you. On good days, I make $3k-$7k in markets. I waltz into my waiter job, because I really don't care about the $100-$200 I make. I need my job so that I don't touch the money in the market. I do have student loan debt. Wasn't able to get a job in the field.
You probably went into massive debt, because you were not working at the same time. BA is easy in US and you should have worked. International students work full time,(even though not supposed to), pay the highest rate in cash, unable to get loans, study in another language, able to work only few jobs that hire them hush-hush. I know working hard is not easy, but you got to do it.

Get a job so you can declare bankruptcy. Beauty of less than ideal job is that you will actually likely qualify for bankruptcy. There are lawyers who know how to add student loans to bankruptcy (prob with a 5 year lowered monthly payment), but I would consider if that might preclude you from federal employment. But then again, maybe getting out of your hole and being debt freeeeee is more tantamount.

Get a plan with all your free time, then execute. As for slave word, I hate that word if not used in historical context. Like context of Juneteenth! Ditch it.

I haven't read most of the replies but I agree. I have inherited wealth after working for 10 years. I am set for life as are my kids. It's a completely different kind of life and it is amazing to have autonomy and freedom.

SHit out of luck people like me, went into massive debt, couldn't get a job, aren't marketable, and I'm stuck in an expensive area because it's the only place I can get work, despite how crappy it is. If I want to try something else, I'll likely have to go back to school, go further into debt, and risk not being able to get a job in that field too. Work from home would be great, but I'll never be allowed to do it with my job. I could live in a less expensive area, and be less of a slave.

So are you sharing your new “revelation” with us?

Yeah it’s definitely him. But he’s right. Law school isn’t for everyone.

I really appreciate your honesty.

Thanks.

You are slave to wants and needs in one way. Debt is a vicious cycle that can pile up more than you need. How much are you in debt for, OP?
