I work at UMD. We don’t have merit-only scholarships that cover this much. A person has to qualify for this much aid on financial grounds, even with our merit awards. They are income limited.

Exactly. My kid got full tuition as merit aid, which is around 10-12K a yr for IS students BTW. A very good strategy by UMD to sweep up the magnet students and enhance the prestige of their CS and Eng dept.

You are misinformed. The Banneker-Key scholarship actually does cover room, board, and a book allowance in addition to full tuition. I know this personally because a family member received it.

In recent years, it is full tuition, but room, board, and books are financial aid dependent. Budget cuts are great!

If you want to agonize over something other than what your children actually learned, then perhaps you'd be happy to know that universities look at how many years of a language you took. And that goes for any of their endeavors, inside or outside regular school. Everything will come right in the end.
