My best friend when I was little was a Vietnamese girl named Van, so I always think if it as female.

Van is also an extremely common (but considered somewhat old fashioned these days) middle name for Vietnames boys. Up until the mid-late 20th century, almost all boys would have Van as a middle name and girls would have Thi.

Van means "they go" or "you (plural, formal) go" in Spanish, if that's a consideration

+ 1. I love it.

Just realized I never updated from two YEARS ago! Turns out we LOVED Donovan and that's what our toddler is named. Fits him perfectly!

OP- this is you? What a great name. Congratulations.

I’ve heard this a few times. It’s just odd as a European because it sounds like you’re missing a first name. Van means “from,” so if he’s Van Robinson or whatever, it sounds like it’s all one last name, so his name is really something else like Michael Van Robinson.

Thanks in advance!

Only if it’s the last name and first name is Kargo
